House is freezing!!

Postby Sega » Wed Nov 21, 2007 7:21 pm

Hello Everybody,

This is my first winter I can remember in Cyprus and its freezing. My house it sooo cold. I live in an apartment on the top floor; it's an old apartment with no central heating or double glazing. During the day I freeze and during the night I freeze even more.

My hands freeze and I am kind of wear coat in my own house (I know, it sounds silly). Is this normal?

How do people in Cyprus prepare for the winters?

Do most people have central heating or are all people poor like me?

Does the president of Cyprus freeze in his house?

It sounds kind of weird but I want to go back to England and warm up, at least my house there is warm and I can at least live in my house.

Does anybody have any advice?

If you think this is cold, you wait till January comes.

I know thats what all my relatives say, but I still live in a house which is freezing. How bad can it get, and what do you people do in your house it keep it warm.

This may sound silly, but do you have thick curtains in the windows and rugs or carpet on the floor?

I was just thinking about getting our holiday house into "winter" mode for my first January there in donkey's years and realised it's all tiled flooring and no curtains.

There's nothing wrong with wearing a fleece indoors . . . it's very Green :D

A lot just suffer it as it's only for a short period .

portable bottled gas fires are often used if you have no central heating ~ most houses don't have the luxury of c/h ~ problem is these gas fires give out a lot of moisture which causes damp in the house when they are used and you have to have some ventilation due to the fumes .

I have a gas fire plus a couple of electric heaters ~ although I can usually get away with the air con on heat instead of cool and one electric fire until January then the lot goes on after sunset and the rest of the evening.

It's surprising how fast I can move from the shower to the bedroom in January ~~ it'd bloody freezing ~ even with all the heat on :(

Buy a good duvet and go to bed early if it gets to cold

It’s bloody freezing because there is no insulation in the walls and the whole reinforced concrete structure cools down as winter progresses… often it can be significantly warmer outside than in the house…

The only way is to pour as much energy into the house as possible – the first two years we lived here (without central heating) we got the oil filled radiators – they have timers on them and you can set them up like central heating so it is warm in the mornings too…

Also draught proof as much as possible – we fitted shutters last winter and they made a huge difference.

We are in a rental house with a lounge the size of a stadium! really cold!!! No point spending the money on shutters!

It gives me an idea of what our own house should be though!
