The president's meeting in Tseri

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

What exactly is annoying, the desire or the objective of the desire?

Exaggerating the power of desire for one, and in general I find phoenix annoying. Its a personal thing.

All nationalisms are unacceptable, including your type GR.

Definitions of "Nationalism":

The term “nationalism” is generally used to describe two phenomena: (1) the attitude that the members of a nation have when they care about their national identity and (2) the actions that the members of a nation take when seeking to achieve (or sustain) self-determination.

Here's another:
Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation. Aspirations for national independence in a country under foreign domination

Yet another:
The desire to bring the people of one's nation together under their own government.

If nationalism is unacceptable Bananiot then perhaps its time you clarified what you have in mind for Cyprus for I dare not mention its antonym...

Bananiot wrote:Then, when you say Cypriot nationalism, I kind of think that what you really mean is Greek Cypriot Nationalism.

You can think whatever you want.

Bananiot wrote:Unluckily for you, stupid franks exist only in the minds of ... nationalists (who tend to walk on clouds most of the time and look for the desirable instead of the feasible) .

That's based on the assumption that you've conducted a feasibility study on Cypriot Nationalism and did not find it to be a solution to the Cyprus problem... please inform of your research.

I might remind you that what EOKA B had actively set about to accomplish upon the arrival of Grivas in 1971 was Greek Nationalism and certainly NOT Cypriot Nationalism so I hope you're not getting confused again.

I’ll have you know that the ONLY thing we haven’t yet tried in Cyprus is in fact Cypriot Nationalism yet funnily enough we have tried every other form of (foreign) nationalism and failed miserably! No surprises there...

GR,

Adopting Cypriot Nationalism is a tough one. For most people it is not easy to let go of the motherland connection and opt for something which is not that well defined yet.

For Greeks it one more burden on top of the Hellenic-Christian split. We have to revere our pre Christian ancestors but also banish paganism, a split that has been called institutionalised schizofrenia. Now on top of that we add the Cypriot thing and that confuses people even more.

I assume it is the same for Turks who read about the glories of the Ottomans but have to condemn them due to Kemalism and on top they have to accept Cypriotism.

Do you have a simple and workable way to achieve a Cypriot national consciousness? One that can stand up to the simplistic challenge like "if Greece and Turkey to to war which side will Cyprus be on?" to give an example among many.
