No!! Not really, Perhaps you are thinking of Paris . I keep in touch with friends in Cyprus and compare cost of living and we come out a little better than Cyprus.

Plus having lived here for over 2years we have found that people do their best to meet you more than half way with the language, please do not forget we live in the the midst of the EU . Do you not feel that France gets bad press from people who do not know it. Some people I spoke to in Cyprus thought that France was the capital of Paris.

Lazy No, just different hours, we all work the same at the end of the year.

Socialist Perhaps !! but Britain is governed by a labour government is that not socialist.

The tax is easy to understand as far as I can see. The tax forms are smaller, you pay fax only on interest on your account.

And although only 50% understand English in France where the £ Sterling is concerned 100% undertand it in Cyprus.

Have you lived or visited France, from what experience do you speak.?

Hello Cheshire Cat

You DO have your head in the sand!

FYi We had a company in France for over 2 years, we sold ASAP after realising how stupid the French are and how HIGHLY taxed business are there.

Ask ANY Frenchman that is an business person how hard it is to progress in France!

Yes the French ARE LAZY all they live for is a TWO hour steak & Chips at lunch!!!

I'm just glad I and my family are out of that country...

All Cypriots, especially those in the tourist "industry" should take a tour of south France. It will help them realise what Cyprus could become with a little flair and good taste.

I have walked the south of France extensively. No other place in the Med can compare in terms of style, care for the environment and quality of life. I love Cyprus because I was born there, but we got to be fair minded.

And when you have an accident the local doctor comes round to the camping site and checks up on you and behaves like a human being. I saw it and could not believe it, but it did happen!

Bucksboy,

Learning French with teachers etc is hard work. I did French in school for years. Finally when I got to France and mixed with the locals, and due to their insistence on speaking French first and English only as a last resort, I picked up more French in a month than I did at school in years.

My advice- get the CDs , try but not too hard, and then plunge in. The French will be quick to teach you.

For the comments about French lessons of the silent kind, well in France it is English Lessons that are being advertised on seedy billboards. Apparently the phrase alludes to some kind of S and M. Languages and their quirks!

Stuart, Almost identical to Cyprus then!
I'll feel pretty much at home I guess as the Cypriots are well known at wearing 2 faces. :D

I do not suppose anywhere is perfect, every country has its good and bad points, The vast majority of the French people I have met have been polite and helpful. Good Manners is something which is taught in schools here.

During my time in Cyprus there was a sense that , if you greased the right palm you could get whatever you wanted. When we moved there from the U.K. we took our dog and cat and they had to go into quarantine.

One day we had a phone call from a guy down at the quarantine kennels who informed us "if you come down to the kennels with a bottle of whiskey in a brown bag , I will sign the papers to release your animals" surely if an animal is in quarantine there is a reason for it and it should stay for the designated time.

We were told when we first went to Cyprus, that there are 3 sets of rules, one for the Cypriots, one for the British and another for the Arabs.

This was said to us by a Cypriot Lawyer.

This is not meant to upset anyone , I am meerly stating what happened.

The same lawyer also told us that " you should never bring all of your money into Cyprus they will never let you take it out" That turned out to be correct, 80,000 euros of our money evapourated in the transfer From Cyprus to France , We cannot get it back , I have been down every avenue I can think of. And some others which were advised to me.

Sounds Like a good idea !!!

Although I am taking them over here in France. But I am sure that it would be helpful to those planning a trip to France for holidays or to move.
