Hi Donna
A lot depends on what you are coming for and the lifestyle you will live.
If you are under retirement age and may need to work, then choose your location wisely.
Commuting is not so easy unless you have your own transport - bear in mind that some companies will expect you to work split shifts on a daily basis so you may have to make the work/home journey twice a day.
Work is not so easy to find in the more "touristy" areas of Cyprus. Or, any that is available will be in the holiday industry, which is notoriously underpaid.
If you are looking for work - then choose somewhere that is a little more industrial such as Limassol, Larnaca & Nicosia. It may not be as pretty as Paphos or Protaras etc but better to have the work than the worry of not having it.
However, if you are coming to live and have all the necessary funds without having to work - the choice is really yours.
But, I would honestly suggest you rent somewhere for at least 12 months to find out a number of things like: do you like the location, are your neighbours friendly & quiet, are there enough shops, doctors, dentists, banks etc in your locality should you not have a car etc, etc....
Also, if you will have friends to stay - is there a bus service available so you don't have to run them everywhere or keep them entertained all the time.
Otherwise, it works out very tiring and also very expensive.
We were very lucky. We found a nice house in a fairly quiet location. Our landlord is lovely and lives right next door - yet, we very rarely see him. We go to him to pay him the rent - he never comes to us and he never asks to come into the house. We've been in the same house for 4 years and our rent hasn't been increased. The neighbours are nice, we have all kinds of amenities in our village/suburb so that we don't have to run to the supermarket everytime we need something. I am only 10 minutes or so from my office and as I only go in for a very few hours each day, it means I'm not spending half my time battling with traffic jams.
Do your homework time and time again. Visit the island often and try to stay in private accommodation rather than holiday accommodation each time, to get a real "feel" of living here. Once you go back home - do the homework again....
We had been visiting for holidays - in both summer & winter for over 10yrs before we made the move. In that time we veered between Limassol originally, then towards Paphos but decided 2yrs before we came that Limassol was definitely the right place for us. Luckily, we made the right decision but it could have so easily turned out very wrong for us if we hadn't changed our minds.
The other suggestion would be to join as many of the forums on Cyprus and ask lots of questions. After all, there are plenty of us here who have already made the journey and most likely - the mistakes too.
Take your time and plan ahead. It will all come together eventually.
Most of all - ENJOY!
GOOD LUCK
