What exactly is this about? What are they accusing her for? Do you think GCs signing would be helpful or maybe those TC extremists will use this as excuse to accuse her more?

This campaign needs the support of all peace-loving people

Postby Tim Drayton » Wed Nov 14, 2007 5:52 pm

The website includes extracts from some of the articles that have appeared in the fascist Volkan newspaper as part of the smear campaign that the nationalists have been running against Neshe Yashin. Unfortunately, these only appear in Turkish.

I have translated one of these extracts here:

NESHE BREAKS DOWN IN TEARS
The hag named Neshe Yashin who lives in the Greek Cypriot side and stood as a candidate in the Greek elections cried her eyes out after losing the election. She allegedly said, “How could they do this to me. Nobody voted for me.” Look here, hag named Neshe Yashin, that’s just the way the Greek Cypriots are. First they use a person and then throw them into the rubbish like a squeezed lemon. Sort out your ideas and don’t get involved in any more of this tomfoolery. This business is nothing like writing about how you made love to a Greek Cypriot youth. Come on, now.

I think the message is clear. If peace-loving GCs do NOT support this campaign, this will be grist to the mill of the chauvinists.

Volkan writes lies. In fact Neshe was voted more than GC candidates in her party. The party (EDY) however did not manage to have an MP.

Sure, it's a lie. I don't for a minute believe that Neshe Yashin broke down in tears, either.

My point is that if you analyse the discourse behind this extract, it provides a clear answer to Sotos' question as to whether GC support would be helpful or not. The message here is clearly, "If you step out of line and promote reconciliation rather than partition, don't expect the GCs to support you when the going gets tough." The best answer that any GC who supports peace can give is to lend their support. I have just looked at the list of people who have signed the petition and see very many Greek Cypriots there, anyway, so this point has obviously got home.

I would give support to this woman . . . but would not sign an online petition as I don't think they are as effective as pressure groups that are more visible.

She has spoken in the past about how the TCs and Turks don't mix because of their vast cultural differences. Also that TC plus Turk marriages are more likely to end in a breakdown.

Is the harassment she is suffering propagated by "settlers" . . . in other words Turks, rather than TCs?
