They'll put it down to God testing faith or bringing his wrath down on infidels.

Seriously how can there be a God when horrific things like this happen. Miracles are simply flukes of nature or strong psychological belief which can be very powerful.

Two people at an evangelical meeting were sent behind a screen so that the vast crowd could pray for them and heal their ailments. The evangelist whipped the crowd into a frenzy asking time and time again if they believed in the power of god. People fainted and others danced in strange trances. You could feel the power that was generated in the room. The evangelist then turned to the two people behind the screen and started to whip their excitement up as well.
“Norman” screamed the evangelist, Norman, can you hear me”.
“Yes” shouted Norman with tears of joy and excitement in his voice.
“Do you believe Norman? Do you believe in the power of prayer” screeched the evangelist.
“I believe…Yes I believe” shouted back Norman.
“Then throw your crutches out from behind the screen and believe so that you may walk again”.
Two well-used crutches came flying out from behind the screen and the evangelist turned his attention on Mary.
“Mary….Mary” Shouted the evangelist “ I know you think you cannot talk because you were born with a deformed voice but believe and speak to me…Believe and speak with the power of god inside of you Mary….Believe and speak to me with the power of prayer. SPEAK TO ME MARY…WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO SAY TO YOUR LORD GOD”.
From behind the screen came a deformed voice and said, “NORMANTH FALLEN OVER”……………………

Miltiades,

YOu just reminded me of a passage from Voltaire. The hero Candid sees a ship containing pirates and slaves sink and asks his all knowing teacher why they drowned. Pangloss the teacher explains that the devil killed the slaves and God punished the pirates. It might answer your questions!
