The end of Turkey's role in Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Turkey's Withdrawal would speed up the "solution".

Where is this definition (the S/21183 report)? I have already said that I accept political equality of communities, but not in the way you want it. Communities should be equal when in comes to culture, languge and religion, but not in just about everything.

Two communities interests and concerns does not consist of just cultural, lingual and religious matters. They also have economical, social, psychological and political interests and concerns.

Read the Gali's set of ideas which based upon UN resolutions and 1990 report (S/21183).

In 1992, Perez de Cuellar’s successor as U.N. secretary-general, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, advanced a Set of Ideas, which drew a map of future territories, gave refugees the right to return home and guaranteed the three freedoms.

For the Turkish Cypriots, the Set of Ideas represented a move toward the Greek Cypriot position, and Denktash rejected them. Then when Glafkos Clerides replaced George Vassilou as Greek Cypriot president in 1993, Clerides also rejected the proposals, placing his faith in a solution to the dispute being forced through the application of the Republic of Cyprus for membership of the European Union (EU), in which freedom of movement, settlement and ownership would be guaranteed.

Because of different reasons, both Denktash and Clerides rejected those set of ideas.

Is this a switch of the British policy, or pre-election slogans?

Turkey: Withdrawal of troops from Cyprus would spur peace efforts

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

19:00 - 07 April 2005 - British Foreign Minister Jack Straw yesterday argued that Turkey withdrawing its troops from Cyprus would considerably help peace efforts on the island.

Responding to British MPs' questions on the Cyprus issue in the House of Commons, Straw stated that Turkish Cypriots' biggest problem is their inability to establish direct commercial ties with European Union countries. "We will continue to encourage the Greek Cypriots to abolish their economic and commercial restrictions against Northern Cyprus," he added.
In addition, he also stressed that finding a resolution to the Cyprus problem was not a precondition for beginning Turkey's EU membership negotiations.
