A chance to drink one of the world’s best wines
By Leo Leonidou
WINE CONOISSEURS across the island are being given an opportunity to participate in a very rare tasting.

On the occasion of Spectus Wine Shops’ tenth anniversary, the company is organising a tasting of several vintages of Château Margaux at its Limassol and Nicosia stores on November 20 and 22 respectively.

Owner George Hadjikyriacos told the Mail that this is the first time such an important event is taking place on the island.

“Château Margaux is recognised as of of the top five château wineries in the world,” he said. “Its rich history and consistency in high quality has made it very famous amongst wine lovers across the globe.”

The total value of the nine wines to be presented comes to £2,000, “with various vintages on offer in order to see the evolution of the wine.”

According to Hadjikyriacos, “tickets can be obtained for the nominal price of £100, with similar events taking place in London charging as much as £600.”
Spectus has been selling the wines since their opening a decade ago, with prices starting at £150 and rising to more than £1,000 for a bottle, depending on vintage.
“For anybody with a love of wine, Château Margaux is a must to experience at least once in your life and more if financially possible,” he joked.

The vineyard of Château Margaux is one of four wines to achieve First Growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification because of its high price.

According to Forbes.com, a bottle of Château Margaux 1787 holds the record as the most expensive bottle of wine ever broken, insured at $225,000. Château Margaux usually consists of approximately 75 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 per cent Merlot, five per cent Petit verdot and Cabernet Franc grapes.

According to the official website, “things of very high quality have never come about by chance. To make a great wine, generous soils, a kind climate and the painstaking attention to detail of the men involved are all essential requirements.”

 Beggar that! What is wrong with the local wines? I love most local wines and my niece is so happy that she can now buy St. Panteleimon back home. Me too as I do not have to transport it anymore!!

If you want a palatable and cheaper wine, try 2 Oceans - blue label, Sauvignon Blanc. It is from South Africa and I love it :!: :!: :!:
