I said we only need one OFFICIAL language . . . Turkish can still be the personal language of choice for whoever desires to speak it . . .

WE JUST DO NOT NEED TWO OFFICIAL LANGUAGES ON A SMALL ISLAND LIKE CYPRUS!

Now you've made me raise my voice . . .

Calm down Phoenix. Breath in and out slowly. In and out. Stop shouting you will wake my cats up. Turkish Language is already an Official Language. If you are so considerate to us, then there is an alternative or two.

I know Turkish is already an official language  hence the trouble we are in; the constant division of two peoples.
With ONLY Greek as the official language, in future, (and any number of other personal choice languages) we can make some strides forward.

Why is that so hard to get through?. . . maybe English is letting us down . . .

Ok listen very carefully I sh....... no forget it. I will byepass my first option. What about English as the only Official Language. Since we will be in EU, it makes more sense and the EU Commissioners will be less inclined to say 'it is all Greek to me'. What about it. End of argument I say. At home you can talk any language you like. I am going to bed now. I suggest you do the same and sleep on it.

According to a report on this story in the Turkish Cypriot Vatan newspaper:

http://www.vatangazetesi.com/haberdetay ... berID=5734

the project is expected to cost "80 billion". I can only assume that this is in old Turkish lira, which equates to 80 million new Turkish lira. That is still a cool 26 million Cyprus pounds. Can this figure be right?
The Association states that it is going to start a campaign to collect this money.

No it's wrong. When they first got the idea (about 2 years ago??) they were still waiting for donations and as I have a very good memory I remember the cost was about 12 thousand CYP. So it seems they added some some, 000s to their numbers...

Now how on earth would it be possible for any group of people who form a union to use "public" property to erect their flags is beyond my comprehension. But I guess in a pseudo state built on free stolen GC land everything is possible.

Yes, millions of pounds does seem an awful lot for two flags.

Talking about a group of people forming a union and using public land, whilst trying to get some data about this new flag project I stumbled across the website of an organisation known as the "TRNC Pentadaktylos Mountain Flag Illumination Association":

http://www.kktcbayrak.org/

Health warning: A lot of people here might find the images on this site hard to stomach!

Tim,the figure cant be 80 Milyar YTL it must be a printing mistake....It probably is 80 Milyar in old currency which is 80 Bin YTL (approx £26650 CYP)
Still...hell of a lot of money to WASTE erecting flags on mountain tops!!!

Oops. They took off six zeros didn't they, not three. It's been a long time since I have had to worry about Turkish currency on a regular basis.
When I first went to Turkey in 1987, my monthly salary was 200,000 Turkish lira. When I left Turkey in 1999, 200,000 Turkish lira was just small change - perhaps just enough to buy a loaf of bread!

Turks unveil giant flags over Pentadaktylos

A CEREMONY took place on Monday in the Turkish occupied north to unveil two giant flags on the Kyrenia mountain range.

The new flags – one Turkish and one TRNC – on the highest peak of the Pentadaktylos mountain range, are 50 metres high and cover a total area of 216 square metres.

They will be illuminated at night.

During a special ceremony yesterday commander of the occupying Turkish forces Huseyin Kivrikoglu, the commander of Turkish Cypriot security forces Mehmet Eroz and Turkish Cypriot brigadier Salih Cem.

An existing TRNC flag painted onto the southern slopes of the range, and equal in size to 11 football pitches, already causes ire to thousands.

According to reports in the Turkish Cypriot press, both the flags can be seen from Turkish coast.

With any luck there will be a force 10 southerly wind and can take both flags all the way to Turkey, so people can see them from real close.

Is the RoC still supplying electric power to the north?

Ru in the south now nikatis? can you see them? I think they look north so you are unable to see them.

Only when the Turkish Generators brake down. Tpap sends free electricity to keep the flags illuminated to remind his people to keep the island divided and hate the TCs.

Just make sure you dont stand under them when the wind blows. A 250 square meter sail takes a lot of strain. Let someone else be a hero!
