Labour MP on bridge-mending visit
Labour MP Andy Love is on the island in an effort to help strengthen ties between Cyprus and Britain after relations sunk to a new low over London's partnership agreement with Turkey.
Cyprus-Britain diplomacy is going through a rough patch with the government engaging in mild retaliatory measures against London in protest over the pact.
The MP for Edmonton has been focusing on the positives between the two countries during contacts with the political leadership of Edek and Akel.
Edek leader Yiannakis Omirou said he made clear to Love that Cypriots were "deeply disappointed" over the stance taken by Britain, especially in its reference to upgrade the breakaway regime.
He also reminded the MP that Britain has an obligation to defend the island's independence and sovereign integrity.
"We were in agreement that there should be continual contact with the British Labour Party to develop ties between the two parties but mainly to improve the position of Britain on the Cyprus problem," Omirou said yesterday.
Love said he was on a mission to strengthen relations between Britain and the Cyprus parliament while also improving links with all the political parties.
The MP from a London constituency with a sizeable Greek Cypriot population said there was an effort to improve the climate following recent invents.
Last week, Nicosia pulled out of a joint forum with Britain in retaliation for London's partnership deal with Turkey that envisages high-level contacts with the breakaway north.
The forum was part of a "structured dialogue" initiated two years ago to improve ties after relations between the fellow EU members reached a low ebb.
The British High Commission said it "regretted" the cancellation of the forum but would look for opportunities to build on and strengthen relations.
The government regards the deal struck in London as a bid to dissuade Ankara from military action in northern Iraq in return for upgraded British ties with the occupied north.
Britain denies the agreement reached between Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan spelt any change in policy towards Cyprus.
An article of the agreement pledged that Britain would work with its European Union partners to "promote direct commercial, economic, political and cultural contacts" with the Turkish Cypriots.
They will also provide "continued help for ‘TRNC’ authorities/universities in their attempts to engage with the Bologna process" and will uphold "the right of representation of the Turkish Cypriots in the European Parliament."
Direct trade between the EU and the Turkish Cypriots was halted by a European court decision in 1994.

What goes on behind the scenes to give the Uk confidence to carry out such measures is more important than your headline reading in tabloid newspapers........
