Time to wake up in the south!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Time to wake up in the south!

Postby cymart » Fri Nov 09, 2007 12:31 am

Last Sunday,I took one of my occasional trips to the north and visited the Karpas where the village of my father-in-law is situated.I will summarise our reception and impressions by saying that the place is as lovely as ever and the Turkish Cypriots who lived with us before were as welcoming as always.
On the way we also visited the new Kaya Artemis hotel which cannot fail to impress anyone who goes to see it.Some people might consider the design, based on the Parthenon,is over the top but what can't be denied is that it is a superb holiday spot with a fabulous beach.
Returning to this side, all we hear from the politicians is about the Annan Plan which has been officially dead and buried since 2004 after it was rejected by this side.
Have none of them anything to tell us about what they plan to do for us in future to get us out of the mess we are in if we choose to vote them into power next February? As one Turkish Cypriot said on Sunday, the Greek Cypriots are living in cuckoo land while Turkey firmly implements its plans to take over the north and drive the Turkish Cypriots into extinction and the best thing we can do is to send all the politicians from both sides on a
long cruise somwhere and tell them not to come back unless they sort out a deal-better still, leave it to the people here and we will do it ourselves!
I fully agree with him as I have heard virtually nothing from any of them that gives me confidence that they could or would do anything to improve the situation in this unfortunate country. They need to do a lot better than they have so far to attract votes from myself and I'm sure many other people here agree with me!

Send them on a cruise yes, but on a merchant ship, no comforts, and military rations. And definitely no prostitutes on board, especially black ones. Our politicians (both sides) have a weakness for ladies of color. My sources are reliable!

What do you propose the people can do to solve the problem?
How do we persuade over 40,000 Turkish soldiers to pack up and go back to Turkey?

Thats really what they told you? Strange because I thought they wanted to keep 40.000 troops occupying our land in order to blackmail us and get the problem "solved" in their way (= Official Tukification of the north part of our country)

The problem is exactly that they don't want to "leave it to the people", but instead they totally align themselves with those foreigners that want to impose to Cypriots their will.

If that was not the case then the solution would be very easy: Create in Cyprus a normal democratic country like all the other in EU, with human rights for all, and no racist discriminations among Cypriots. Problem solved.

The “TRNC” is the cuckoo land as its citizens haven’t yet realized that Turkey already runs it and cannot possibly take control any further than she already has since her invasion/occupation of Cyprus.

Those "concerned" Turkish Cypriots that don't want to be extinct might want to voice their concerns to their foolish leaders instead of sitting around harboring Turkey and pointing their finger at the RoC!

You are still blinkered Piratis and do not know Turkish Cypriots at all, maybe you should make the effort to enlighten yourself and meet a few TCs, you may even be impressed that they do not want to keep the army as they know you fear them and feel uncomfortable so with a solution in site that would give them a better future they would have no problem asking the world to persuade Turkey to leave. But never forget for us to do that we have to be 100% certain that we will never have to ask them to come back to save us a second time as they may not be interested this time, would you blame them?

Your cries for a democracy like any other EU country means GCs will be in control, how do you expect us to take that leap of faith when our history tells us you do not have our best interests at heart, how will ensure we are not discriminated against and that we will not rot in the corridors of the ECHR trying to get our waters supply turned on? There has to be procedures and safeguards in place to ensure both communities behave and are commited to a united island with penalities for those that try to step out or twist that framework for the benefit of diluting or changing it.

Who is right?

Postby cymart » Fri Nov 09, 2007 2:03 pm

The essence of the whole problem is lack of faith-neither side trusts the other and unfortunately those who are in power continue to cultivate this attitude among the people.Of course the Turkish army has to leave once there is an agreed and workable solution and surely everyone accepts that in principle? But I can also understand why the Turkish Cypriots have certain reservations about things changing overnight and don't see why a timetable cannot be agreed that will be applied and monitored by other neutral powers.Without this, the Greek-Cypriots cannot feasibly agree either to any overall solution as it compromises THEIR security needs.
A good way to start dealing with this very thorny issue would be to form a peace and reconciliation committee like they did in South Africa.Much as I disagree with him on many other issues,I will admit that Papad's recent proposal to form a citizens association where both sides can build informal contacts with each other is at least a sensible suggestion as we have to start from somewhere........And opening Ledra Street-AT LAST-would help to improve the atmosphere enormously-why don't they just do it and forget the nittty gritty petty posturing from each side?
I met a friend from Russia who is holidaying in the north with his family when I went over last Tuesday. He knows Cyprus very well and used to live in Limassol for a few years back in the 90's.We went to the Turkish side of the Ledra St. barrier and like he said, this whole situation is just crazy when people can travel all over the world nowadays without many formalities!

there is an element of thruth in the original post. both sides are in denial and living in cuckoo land. Turkey is certainly positioning itself in taking over the island and the Turkish Cypriots are gonna miss out or move to the south to save their race. far as am concerned Cyprus past presnet and future are the loosers.

DEAL WITH IT TOGETHER

Big fallacy! Turkey cannot take the north any more than she already has Humanist except maybe make an international announcement of annexation and that would actually be a BLESSING for us but she is not that stupid unfortunately…
