phoenix, if I may make an alternative suggestion, I personally find the service offered by 'Internet Calls' superior to those of 'Skype', I often phone Australia and other far flung places, the recipient of the calls does not have to be a subscriber to any other than the normal telephone service.

An hour long conversation to Ozz 'FREE' can't be a bad deal, I found 'Skype', to be a little more troublesome but would not condemn it, merely compare it.

An initial subscription of 10 Euros gives you (I think) 120 free days, thereafter the calls are ridiculously cheap and an automatic top-up revives the free period once again.

Well worth having a look at, ( in my humble opinion) maybe other members know better ?.

Who offers the cheapest solution here?

Thanks

Sorry can't help with your question . . . but can you tell me what the benefits of SKY + are i.e. what services do you get with it as a package? :)

Cant believe you ask this, Phoenix. Try their site at

http://www.digital-tv.co.uk/sky-digital/

Sorry , you did not ask me.

Deniz dear, I was interested in their services in Cyprus . . .

I am not a fan of TV etc but when we move to Cyprus I have been told I may need SKY or some such satellite service to get internet access because broadband won't be accessible from the village.

I would need something like SKYPE as well for chat to hubby etc back in U.K. :D

Alright. It wasnt very clear. I hope you sort things out to your satisfaction then you can advise me when I move HOME.

Deniz, do satellites transmit to the "TRNC" ? . . . . is there not an embargo?

Niki wrote:Grump we went through a number of hoops and found the best way was to pretend to live in a parents UK address and order a card and subscription from there. Cypriot suppliers also charge a service fee on top.

As long as you pay from a UK account by direct debit and say you don't have access to a telephone line (they will want to connect you for 'extra' services) they don't know any different. They may be suspicious though when you use a supplier from Cyprus who has 500 cards subscribed to 1 address! Then they will just cut all 500 off the service and this has happened.

SKY knew what the deal was when we set this up, you could tell by the "oh yeah!" tone of voice up but 27% of the subscription is non UK so they would be daft to cancel all of them! :D

Thanks Niki,

We had a supplier here but they went bust recently...

Unfortunately, it isn’t convenient for us to set-up the card in the UK at the moment which is why I am searching for a good value supplier here…

Skype is free but you'll need a decent web-camera setup at both ends.

Thanks GR! . . . but you would still need broadband / satellite internet access to set skype up in the first place, right?

Absolutely! 1 Gigabit is good for video conferencing.

Great, I'm clear on one thing now, thank you :D

That's shite actually... you can't get 1 Gigabit...

Cyprusgrump . . . are you Scottish by any chance? :D

Eliko, thank you for pointing out the option . . . you are quite the lateral thinker (related to Edward de Bono perchance 8) ) . . . always there (when you're here) with an alternative. :D

phoenix, thank you for your compliment, I have been likened to 'Marco Polo', 'Osama Bin Laden', 'James Bond' and several other famous AND infamous personalities in the recent past.

Personally, I rather fancy myself as being a bit like 'Moses', took the wrong turn and ended up in the land of 'Milk and Honey' instead of the 'Land of Oil'.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if he had taken the alternative route?, there MUST be a God.

Now, this thought, I will be pondering on for the rest of the day . . . :?

Great one, Eliko!
