Sorry can't help with your question . . . but can you tell me what the benefits of SKY + are i.e. what services do you get with it as a package? :)

Cant believe you ask this, Phoenix. Try their site at

http://www.digital-tv.co.uk/sky-digital/

Sorry , you did not ask me.

Deniz dear, I was interested in their services in Cyprus . . .

I am not a fan of TV etc but when we move to Cyprus I have been told I may need SKY or some such satellite service to get internet access because broadband won't be accessible from the village.

I would need something like SKYPE as well for chat to hubby etc back in U.K. :D

Click on my www button...

WOW . . . I've never clicked on any one's www button before . . . what a world. This forum has so much on offer! :D

I will peruse the link this evening when I am not likely to be called away.

Cyprusgrump . . . are you connected with SKY provision?

How long from when you order to them coming out to install (realistically)?

No, nothing to do with Sky... just broadband.

We keep the hardware in stock - no more than a week to fit you in the engineer's diary...

Now you've lost me . . . :?

We have a telephone line at the village house, would I, or would I not be able to get broadband with or without SKY ?

Maybe I need to spend the time to acquaint myself with your www link before I ask any more silly questions!

Skype is free but you'll need a decent web-camera setup at both ends.

Thanks GR! . . . but you would still need broadband / satellite internet access to set skype up in the first place, right?

Absolutely! 1 Gigabit is good for video conferencing.

Great, I'm clear on one thing now, thank you :D

It depends…

If you are close enough to the telephone exchange you can get a broadband connection from Cyta via your ‘phone line.

If not, we can provide a broadband connection via satellite – anywhere in Cyprus in fact.

However, although our dish points in roughly the same bit of sky as a Sky dish we do not provider any television channels with our service.

To get Sky here you need a huge dish (minimum 2.7m for the BBC channels). Our dish is a tiny 98cm.

Aaahh, a glimmer of light spreading in the dark!

We're probably too far from the exchange which is why I was told we would need satellite access. That established I am now clear we could have broadband without junk TV.

But the www you gave me, is not for your broadband service . . . just SKY with stations etc.

Do you have a site? . . . or should I contact you nearer the time . . . end of December?

Grump we went through a number of hoops and found the best way was to pretend to live in a parents UK address and order a card and subscription from there. Cypriot suppliers also charge a service fee on top.

As long as you pay from a UK account by direct debit and say you don't have access to a telephone line (they will want to connect you for 'extra' services) they don't know any different. They may be suspicious though when you use a supplier from Cyprus who has 500 cards subscribed to 1 address! Then they will just cut all 500 off the service and this has happened.

SKY knew what the deal was when we set this up, you could tell by the "oh yeah!" tone of voice up but 27% of the subscription is non UK so they would be daft to cancel all of them! :D
