LPG heaters such as cabinet heaters are used extensively here in Cyprus, as an LPG specialist in the UK for over 25 years I can offer the following advice.
1. Gas here is neither Propane or butane, it is a mix of both tending towards butane. Regulators are available everywhere in supermarkets etc, they use a bigger size than UK so a Calor or Unigas will not fit.
2. Provided you allow for condensation and ventilate the moisture will not be a problem, remember every kg of gas will produce about the same weight of water vapour, so open your windows during the day when its usually hot enough to clear out the damp air.
3. Best way to heat is to install a wood burner and top up with a cabinet heater, the wood burner will remove the water vapour up the chimney, you will get a quick warm up from the gas and then switch off when the wood burner gets on song.
4. Cabinet heaters are cheap here, but you cannot get them repaired, I have seen perfectly good heaters junked because they have been allowed to collect dust inside the burners and their owners have been scared by the smell or popping caused by poor maintenance.
5. Store your cabinet heater in a poly bag and get your local garage to blow out the burner area with an airline (carefully, not too much pressure!)if it starts to misbehave.
6. Check the regulator "O" ring seal, cylinders here are abused and poorly maintained!! Leak check with your nose, if in doubt use soapy water around the regulator bottle connection..
7. Gas bottles are not purged and cleaned often or at all, a bottle that seems to have liquid swilling around the bottom usually contains nasty smelling heavy ends which are the condensed remains of many years where the added smell agent collects into a parafin like liquid which is evil.
8.When changing a bottle at the dealer try to get a shiny painted one and reject the faded dented paint splashed ones which cost the same.
9. Most gas dealers will swap any make for what they have in stock, prices are fairly constant across all companies.
