What's really right with Cyprus today (1)

Postby Niki » Fri Nov 02, 2007 7:57 am

As a continuation of the popular 'What's wrong.....'. Cyprus does have it's 'problems' but I would just like to add my humble opinions of what is right about Cyprus:-

Weather (of course), Souvla with friends, good medical service (beats the UK anyway), an inherent respect for family and older people, beautiful scenery, mixing of many cultures, safety for children (I couldn't let my 2 go off by themselves ever in the UK), a totally different feeling when you get up in the morning - the sky is blue, the colours are vibrant.... just a more positive experience, the fact my daughters have regained their childhood without wanting to grow up too quickly.

I could go on but that'll do for now. :D

My BMW needed a replacement headlight, which would have cost around £1000 (it was of the self-levelling type but had 'dropped') although it was a couple of months out of Warranty the Dealer did not charge me.

My jeweler never charges me for repairs, gives me coffee and ask why I do not come by more often.

The men who colect my refuse, always smile and say 'Good Morning'.

I went to my Post Office box yesterday, to find it open - yet no-one had taken the box of DVDs that was there.

I was standing at the back of a long bank queue, when one of the staff called me out of the line, remembering my name, and served me immediately.

Yesterday, I had a Router delivered, installed and set up; total cost £26!

Niki, well spoken, nice to read some positive comments and really glad you seem to be enjoying your new life here.

Good luck for the future to you and your family.

Some thoughts of my own

Postby Tim Drayton » Fri Nov 02, 2007 9:49 am

Good thread.
What I love about Cyprus:
1. Low crime rates
2. Safety - you can go anywhere at any time
3. No beggars or down and outs on the streets
3. Genuinely hospitable people
4. Well-behaved children
5. Mild winters
6. Miles and miles of deserted tracks winding their way through the hills
7. Troodos with its unique fauna
Just a few things that immediately come off the top of my head.
What I really admire is the existence of a vibrant free market economy, combined with an absence of social exclusion or marginalisation, certainly not to the extent that you get in the UK or the USA. I think this is the explanation for points 1-3 above.
For all those expats who keep whinging I have only one question. Why do you stay?

Lana that really peeves me. Any establishment should not allow people to jump the queue. I was in the bank yesterday queuing for over 30minutes :x :x :x

Same happened to me when I visited the Land Registry office with my cousin. There were about thirty people in the queue before us, from all walks of life (from their clothes they were wearing). Suddenly my cousin got recognised and called in to the office staight away, where we were immediately seen to with coffee too. My protestations went unheeded. The Cypriot official retorted, "this is the way we do things here", to my embarrassment.

Iste boyledir bizim memleketimiz!

trans: and this is how our Country IS.

I still love Cyprus though.

For starters, Cyprus is a true free country! You can park almost wherever you want, and speed almost as much as you want.

Second, you’ll find the most delicious food anywhere, make new friends easily, and get the best of both the old-fashioned and modern world.

Third, you can freely express yourself, be angry, be emotional, be sad, be in any mood you want without people looking at you funny…

In Cyprus I function as an individual… :D
