ferries

Postby pkb1 » Thu Nov 01, 2007 5:31 pm

Hi......am i right in thinking there are no longer any ferries from Greek mainland or Italy to Cyprus? now we dont have the GB option to fly our dogs over when we move we were thinking of driving to the nearest port then putting our vehicle on the ferry and flying the short hop with the dogs....it seems a logistical nightmare now as we thought it was all sorted,
it is too expensive to cargo them all [ 6] so looking desperately for alternitives, if anyone can help with routes too i would be grateful
cheers

Try Grimaldi Ferries, but they are not cheap! Also, check the current rules on importing your car, there should be no duty as we are all in the EU but Cyprus is still hanging on to demanding duty of many thousands of pounds more than the vehicle is actually worth!!!!

Any Car ferry will be expensive even UK to France, for Uk to Cyprus look at between £400 and £800 depending on car size. You will need to check out you eligibility for revenue exemption, if you own the car over 6 months, are retiring to Cy you can save a chunk of money. Check out the Cyprus gov websites, and beware of out dated information which is being copied forward by various forums, the law here changes faster than the seasons so you need to keep up to date and double check. It is very frustrating to get a "good lead" only to find out that it is a couple of years out of date!! The customs and excise website gives a good Excel calculator to estimate what you should pay, this is much too steep but we have to live with their way of doing things. Hi
the web site address I submitted yesterday apparently will not load when I tried it, try this one re VAT and Excise duty on cars.
http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/customs/Custo ... enFrameSet
Or start with a search Cyprus.gov which is how I got there.

Im trying to collect all the relevent regulations and info on car importing as Im going to import a car soon.

Having looked at the cars being offered in local dealers I came to the conclusion that most cars over 5 years old have been neglected and or abused with little attention being paid to maintenance schedules they are superficially tarted up to sell. I have chosen to buy a UK car which is being fitted with a new engine and thoroughly gone over by a specialist so that I wont face the prospects of having an engine bodged up to keep it running using local parts because of the beurocratic tribulations of fitting a new engine in Cyprus.

The car is a Range Rover so I expect to pay a high price to the revenue guys as although Im retired I wont qualify for exemption.

If any reader has imported lately please let me have some feedback so that I can put the information in one place.

PKB,

Salamis lines has RO/RO vessels twice a week from Piraeus to Limsassol. The ships are not "civilian" cruisers, but they are OK for the two nights of the trip. You leave Piraeus pm on day on and arrive Limassol am day three.

They go all year round. Call and make sure you mention you have a car, they will not easily take passengers with no vehicles, 00357-25-899999.

The other alternative in summer is Louis Cruises, one ship of theirs, the Princess Marissa will take one way passengers. I do not know about pets though....

Hi Pauline

Have I missed something? When you say we don't have the GB option to transport the dogs over, do you mean something has changed so we can't take pets over. I have been reading about the foot and mouth but haven't read anything about not taking dogs over?

Hiya...............no you can bring them over to Cyprus its just that GB airways has been bought over by Easyjet and they wont take animals
so that has taken the option of getting them over just by excess baggage
and it is about 80 % dearer to get them over by cargo.........but not impossible

That makes sense now, I read about easyjet taking them over, but didn't realise they wouldn't take pets now. We were looking at BA, so now we need to look at it all again, thanks for the info.

Lucy went back to the vet yesterday, and he was pleased with her progress, she is doing quite well. Still falls over when she sneezes! I shouldn't laugh but she can be quite funny.

I've dropped you a line by post ref:- doggy day.

Take care

We booked our dog in as excess baggage with GB just two weeks ago . . . for flying out in January 2008.

Presumably if this has only just occurred, they will still honour all booked ones.

I'll phone them tomorrow :?
