Police deny spate of attacks on Turkish Cypriot cars

POLICE yesterday denied reports in the bicommunal newspaper Dialogue that there had been an increase in the number of attacks against Turkish Cypriot cars at the Orphanides shopping centre in the past two weeks.

Dialogue, which is published in Greek, Turkish and English, reported that according to its information two Greek Cypriots stopped a Turkish Cypriot car leaving the car park, smashing its windows with iron bars.

It also said “a great number of cars in Carrefour’s car park have been sprayed with paint” and that a Greek Cypriot youth was arrested after stopping a Turkish Cypriot woman’s car to cover its windscreen with a Greek flag.

In addition, it said that flyers with ‘Cyprus is Greek’ were being placed on the windscreens of Turkish Cypriot cars.

“They cross into south Cyprus to do most of their shopping at the price of ruining businesses here in the north,” wrote Resat Akar. “Even if they are not received with gratitude for their continuing good will, they should not be subjected to such attacks.”

Police spokeswoman Chrystalla Demetriou said she had checked out the information in Dialogue and told the Cyprus Mail: “This is not the case. We don't have any increase in attacks on Turkish Cypriot cars.”

Demetriou said police had not had any reports of such activity taking place, and that in the past fortnight there had been one incident involving a Turkish Cypriot vehicle. “Someone’s car had been scratched as it was parked,” she said. The incident was reported to the police.

Akar put the Cyprus Mail in touch with a Turkish Cypriot woman working in the south whose windscreen he said had been smashed in the incident cited. But the woman, speaking in Turkish, said no such thing had happened to her. However, Akar did have in his possession one of the ‘Cyprus is Greek’ flyers: “Someone has to stand up and give us some answers about these incidents,” he said.

c'mon guys,it is a well known fact that TC vehicles are frequently vandalized in the "free areas"...Just because it doesn't get any coverage on GC press or ROC police records doesn't mean it does not happen.
Why is it so hard for you to admit this fact?

Fair enough comment soto...at least be man enough to say "we will carry on approving vandalization of TC vehicles because you people did a lot worse to our properties"

Well it just so happens that today Sener Levent wrote the following:

"In the nortnern part of Cyprus there are 12 newspapers, 6 tv channels and 8 radio stations. Of the 12 papers only one accepts the reality that the island is under Turkish occupation. Only three newspapers avoid publishing racist and chauvinist articles. Three tv channels are controlled by nationalists. In the remaining channels you occasionally hear the voice of peace. Readio stations, two of which belong to the army, are controlled by nationalists."

Whoever edited that article in Dialogu about the alleged attacks in RoC ought to be fired, and he should take the journalist who wrote the piece with him in his new shoeshine business. News is ALWAYS attributed to a source, and if the source cannot be named for security or other reasons (ie is a victim of blackmail) you state the fact and say whether you have their name and particulars. So who were the victims of the crimes, when did the crimes happen, were the police called and by whom, did the police verify the crime, these are all questions a reported should put in his piece. None of this is stated in this hack job.
