No way! They'll still be there, if brushed slightly under the carpet, perhaps.

According to latest eurostats, waste generated by UK and Germany was (approx) 600 and 640 kg per person. For Cyprus it was 720 kg per person, making it third biggest proportional producer of waste in EU (just after Ireland - Iceland was biggest at over 1000 kg per person!). Of course this is just officially collected municipal waste - if you included the rubbish tipped unofficially I'm sure that Cyprus could give Iceland a good run for its money!

Are you all seriously suggesting Cyprus, or any other country, should be kicked out of the EU because it produces a lot of rubbish?

Maybe it's because for its size, it has an awful lot of visitors per annum!

Thermodynamics really! . . . . . conservation of matter, entropy and what goes in must come out! :D

Let's not assume that the EU is some sort of a pinnacle in civilization!

Cyprus behavior towards EU regulations etc is unacceptable.

I agree and understand exactly what you are saying, and to be honest I was thinking of exactly the same thing a few days ago. I feel that this will soon change. Cyprus as a country will be forced to accept new rules and regulations from Europe and eventually be as the other European countries. The reason Cyprus will accept these changes are due to financial gain and stability.

As a country Cyprus has been on good terms with European law, however there are still some grey areas that need resolving. These areas will soon change in the near future; it's all a matter of gradually changing the way people think. The important fact here is that the Cypriot government listens to Europe, therefore change is inevitable.

All of you people should look up the Eurofraud league. Those "butter would not melt in their mouth" countries you consider perfect, like Germany, UK, France and Italy are way up in the defrauding of EU funds!

If you want to see neglect and disregard of public places and garbage take a trip through the south of Italy, preferably by train and local bus. Then let us talk about which country is more European!

So far, judging from press reports and talks with Euro MPs, Cyprus is towing the line pretty well. If anything Cyprus is proving TOO WILLING, when it comes to implementing EU regulations and decisions. Other countries, like Poland, bargain the crap out of Europeans before they accept anything. That is the way to behave in Europe, not by bending over backwards, (and sometimes forwards) like Cyprus does.

And no Ray, a nation cannot be kicked out of the EU. It is almost impossible to do that. See the case of the Austrian fascist party leader. It can be given the cold shoulder but expulsion is a non starter. Now tell us how the UK is a true European power when it acts like the USA's trojan horse all the time. A few years back the UK even admitted that its security services spied on EU officials, even the ones friendly to Britain! Very European behavior etsi! Give us a break buddy!
