The reason why the Christian West for centuries didn't have easy access to the Classical learning of the Christian East was because Muslims and Jihad had made the Mediterranean unsafe. True, the Byzantine era is totally unknown to the average westerner. They exalt the achievements of the Rennaissance but forget that at the same time the Byzantines had some notable achievements, like the abolition of slavery centuries before the West, it was in 1066 if I recall rightly. This article doesnt mention the fact that it was the Christian West who destroyed much of Constantinople and led to much of Byzantium's downfull during the first Crusade.
