MEASURES AT CROSSSING POINTS AGAINST FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
Precautionary measures have been taken at all border-gates between the TRNC and South Cyprus following the detection of a case of foot-and-mouth disease at a farm in South Cyprus.
As part of the measures, pedestrians and vehicles crossing the border are being disinfected to prevent the spread of the disease into the North.
Stringent controls are also being made at crossing points to prevent the entry of meat and dairy products into the TRNC.
The Director of the TRNC Veterinary Department Nazim Akcaba told reporters after on the spot inspections at border gates that the measures were necessary as the disease could easily spread to the TRNC.
Explaining that vehicles and pedestrians crossing the border are being disinfected, he said officials are carrying out strict inspections of all vehicles and pedestrians to prevent the entry of meat, meat and dairy products into the TRNC.
Mr Akcaba said that the measures will remain in force until the risk of the disease is eliminated.
Meanwhile, a total of 76 farms in South Cyprus have been put under quarantine after the detection of a case of foot-and-mouth at a farm.
Earlier, samples taken from the farm where the disease was detected - were sent to a UK-based laboratory for analysis and results are expected to be announced tomorrow.
The Foot and Mouth Disease is an infectious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, in particular cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and deer.
