Bi-communial demonstrations against Brit bases and..........

Postby brother » Tue Mar 08, 2005 7:18 pm

Volkan newspaper on the bi-communal youth demonstration against the British bases and all foreign troops
Turkish Cypriot "Volkan" newspaper (08/03/05) devotes its front page header to the joint peace campaign organised last week on Troodos mountain by the Greek and Turkish Cypriot Youth organizations EDON (United Democratic Youth Organization), RTP (Republican Turkish Party), CLP (Communal Liberation Party), NCP (New Cyprus Parts) and CSP (Cyprus Socialist Party).

The Greek and Turkish Cypriot Youth marched to Mount Olympus Radar installations of the British chanting slogans against the British bases and holding placards with slogans: "ALL TROOPS OUT OF CYPRUS - INDEPENDENT ISLAND", "NOBODY CAN PREVENT PEACE IN CYPRUS" and "CYPRUS BELONGS TO THE CYPRIOTS - GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS COMMON STRUGGLE - COMMON COUNTRY" which "Volkan" newspaper publishes in its leader under the title "What is this Mr Talat?"

The paper goes on to ask the leader of RTP, Mr Talat the following:

"What is this shame? Are you not ashamed of the fact that under this poster calling for the withdrawal of the Turkish army from the island there is the signature of the RTP (Republican Turkish Party)?

Is the aim of your desire to become President to get a new post to implement the slogan on the placard and take the Turkish troops who protect the "TRNC" out of the island? The Turkish Cypriots expect a satisfactory statement from you regarding your signature under this slogan on the placard".

Now this is what i am talking about, the people who want whats best for all cypriots and not one side, viewpoint look at this and understand that the will of the people is more powerful than the liars in goverment who are more interested in keeping their cushy jobs than finding solution which would only serve to put most of them on the scrap heap.

That's what I'm also wondering about. It was clerly a youth demonstration against all troops stationed in Cyprus. And I applaud them for this.

is volkan a right wing paper?

Dear brother
I want the best for all Cypriots as well, my viewpoint stems from seeing realities and facts that we are getting nowhere, just going around in circles and kidding ourselves into thinking that one day we will achieve a solution both sides will be committed to, dont hold your breath.

I only know one thing. People should think twice before even saying boo to the British military. They never forget anything. I think stirring up the British military this way is dangerous for all Cypriots. Do they know what happened last time? They are playing with fire.  :!:

It is good to see people acting together as Cypriots, though. I am sure this is not what Blair and Straw were talking about.

Hehe, probably not

Guys, I have a kind of question that is irrelevant to this thread, I just didn't know where else to put it (yeah, it just dawned on me that I should just open another thread... anyway).
What's the deal with Talat? What is he like? I'm pretty sure we're getting a distorted picture from our GC press. Can someone elaborate on his views on the problem and his overall political attitude?
Thanks

Talat prior to getting elected was very pro-solution but after getting his foot in the door he has relaxed his effort and slightly changed his stance, but he still remains firmly rooted to the idea of solution imo.
