The real problem of course is drugs and access to drugs.

Most prostitutes are working just to supplement their drug habits.

Sad but true! :(

Is that like everywhere, or just in the UK?

i haven't read thru this whole thread, but i must say that i don't think it is purely Cypriots being perverted! it is a natural thing, not specific to any one country. the sexual drive is part of our human condition. it is natural. who puts the definitions on what is perverted or not? perversion is, for the most part, placed on us by religion. (granted, pedophiles, bestiality, rape, and necrophilia are perversions. not a heck of alot otherwise is).
double standards are pure garbage, another restriciton put on us mostly by religions. also, the fact that women can sometimes not hide the fact that they have been sexually active, depsite thier marital status, resulting in pregnacies. if it were men who carried the children in thier bellies of 9 months, the double standard would apply to men and not women.
there is nothing wrong with exploreing onees sex drive. God gave it to us to enjoy. he wants us to be happy. which is not to say we have to screw every person we meet, but we also don't have to spend out lives monogomously. (unless of course, you are married--then you should honor those vows, or not get married in the first place!)
just my 2 cents.

I lived in the UK most of my life where I worked, studied, eat and watch TV and the rest of it. Anyway I have been here now for a few months and it seems that everybody is adamant in taking me to prostitutes (literally) to have intercourse with them, their not joking either!! I even know people who go there openly as if it's a cafe.

Some guy even claimed that he would show me the ropes for free!! They think it to be an essential part of growing up. What's the deal? Not only that, but people have a slightly screwed up perception on what being gay is. They believe homosexuals are only of the receiving side of the act, which basically gives every person the right to be gay without being gay, if you get what I mean. It's like messed up!!

It seems to be a v.sex orientated place. Is this normal? Has anybody else noticed this? I know I cannot change this, but how do I know if somebody thinks life this, or is of that caliber of people.

Does anybody else have any stories or similar situations?

I know it's a major problem in the U.K. It made big news a while back because of that serial killer who targeted prostitutes in East Anglia (I think?).
It's a problem in the US too and some other major countries . . . so I suppose by extrapolation it may apply to Cyprus too :?

Closing the cabarets etc

Postby cymart » Thu Nov 01, 2007 4:00 pm

An opinion poll in a local English language news paper here in Paphos said 89% of people here want them closed down, considering that they are an evil and ugly phenomenon in what is supposedly a selective and respectable small town which is advertised as being an ideal family holiday destination etc.I also have a friend here in immigration who I have discussed the subject with many times in recent years and while he fully agrees with this too, he has also made it clear that nothing will happen to change things much because people at high levels are involved in either using them or protecting the people that run them, including the government indirectly by collecting taxes etc! This way it suits everyone from the customers to the owners and he warned me not to try to make problems for thse kind of people or I will end up regretting it,even though he agrees with how I feel, because they are the lowest level of society and can be dangerous to anyone who gets in their way!
As for the girls,he has obviously met many of them and speaks fluent Russian himself:He says there are many who come here knowing what is involved and some have even been on several 'tours' etc. because they consider the money they can earn here in several months justifies the means compared to what they can earn at home etc.But he does also admit there are cases of co-ercion where girls have been trafficked and duped and agrees this must be rigourously opposed .

I completely agree, but I keep thinking to myself. If these places did not exist in Cyprus, would there not be more paedophiles and rapists, which is kind of worse. Just like in the UK. What do you think?

Am not sure: part of the Orthodox menatilty, perhaps???? Daughters should be virgins at marriage, but sons should sow their wild oats before marriage. The only alternative for normally constituted youngsters is masturbation but taking oneself in hand is a worse sin than visiting a prostitute. Just a thought???

a bit more info.

Postby cymart » Thu Nov 01, 2007 6:06 pm

It might help if people understand a bit more about the countries where these girls come from:they used to be mainly from Thailand and the Phillipines, but especially after 1989 when the communist regimes in eastern europe ended they have been increasingly from that area,Romania being the first to lead the way, followed by Bulgaria then places like Ukraine,Belarus and Moldova.Although they are often referred to as 'Russian' few of them actually come from Russia itself, although they speak a dialect of that language.Having lived in Russia myself quite recently and also being able to speak the language quite well I obviously have an advantage when it comes to understanding the circumstances which lead them into taking jobs abroad. The three above mentiond countries have massive economic problems and millions of people live in poverty on very low salaries compared to the cost of living there.Moldova is in dire straits and enormous numbers of people from there work abroad to support their famlies at home. These unfortunate human beings are easy prey for traffickers of every kind and it is a fact that some end up here in Cyprus on both sides with the women invariably stuck in the sex trade with all that it implies!
Their level of education varies from qualified professionals such as doctors(see last Sunday Mails report) to simple village girls who are barely literate and knew nothing about life outside before they came here.
Without ignoring that there is a similar problem in England and other E.U. countries that the authorities are struggling to clamp-down on,it is no excuse for a small island like Cyprus to pretend that it does not exist and just continue to tolerate it because it is convenient for those who buy their pleasure in this way.......If it is o.k. why are there no Cypriot girls working in cabarets?

Well I know of several Nigerians who worked the matteress it seems that the black skin is a bonus. trouble is they end up being used by the Eastern block girls. as u say its an easy way to earn money the bar girls in Nigeria earn peanuts?
However the way they are coming in through flight and id fixers in Manchester, they now use french ID's so straight forward to get in.
