Noisy Neighbours

Postby Jagsman » Mon Oct 29, 2007 12:25 pm

Any ideas on how best to deal with noisy neighbours? We stay in a small complex in one of the villages just outside Paphos and we have an alcoholic female who thinks nothing of shouting and swearing at all hours of the night/morning.Requests to keep the noise down are met with a mouthful of abuse.By all accounts she is a nice woman when sober but refuses to recognise she has a problem.
We're now thinking of asking the police to get involved but does anyone know what their response is likely to be? Several of us older residents are now seriously thinking of moving but now is not a good time to sell plus I hate the thought that scum are dictatinghow I live.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Best not to buy in these little Englands mate. Buy in proper Cyprus with Cypriot neighbours. Ours are brilliant.

...but are Cypriot neighbours quiet? Not in my experience; they love noisy, family gatherings, they eat long and late - and on their front verandahs so if you have your bedroom window open.....

They make great neighbours warm and friendly - but quiet?...as I said, not in my experience!

There's always the brick through the window, or petrol bomb

but unless someone talks to her when sober you haven't a chance. If she is constantly pissed then even the cops ain't gonna do alot.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Yes, but often we are with them enjoying the hospitality.

I think it has something to do with were your property is situated. I know of a similar couple who moved out (actually sold their house for less than what they bought it) because of the same reason. There's was a terrace squashed between 8 other terraces and slap bang in the middle was a pool. The only trouble was when anybody went in the pool you could here them from all the houses. Anyway I spoke to the people in question, basically they were English people who moved to Cyprus 14 years ago, but they were having trouble with the British who moved here 3 years ago. They were shocked on the language they used and how uncivilized they actually where (her words not mine). Anyway they solved their problem by buying a detached house in a nice area with much open space. I don't think it is easy to do that today with house prices being as they are.

my mother had an English man living next door and he always used to knock on her door at 22:00 to complain about TV volume... once i was in there and told him if he knocks again on my mothers door i will beat the shit out of him. Then i complained to my landlord about him being a total asshole and he was asked to leave the next month... :D and he did. So to all of you boring people who got used to go to bed at 21:00.... THIS IS CYPRUS, we have loud family gatherings and we go to sleep at 1:00. If you don't like it sell your houses and build a quiet noise free sanctuary somewhere on the top of a mountain.

In my experience urban professional Cypriots are very peaceful and considerate neighbours. The residents in all the other flats in my block are Cypriot white collar professionals and they are the best neighbours I have ever had.
