Cyprus Business

Postby Sega » Fri Oct 26, 2007 8:42 am

I am struggling to understand business principles in Cyprus (i am GC so I speak in Greek). I have had a few problems, it seems that the people I am dealing with can all talk-the-talk (as if they were layers) but nobody actually honours their word (or does their job) and most people I deal with make up stuff. Does any Greek-Cypriot business person know what the deal is?

When I say something I normally honour it or else the next time I say something it would mean nothing. I am currently being ignored by two companies, who promised to do work for me, one of those companies got paid in full (i know silly me). I am sure it is the same everywhere, but I have only started experiencing these difficulties and to be honest I can feel myself cracking!!

Does GC business person have any advise? (sorry to limit it to GC; it's just they might be able to better explain the mentality)

Its typical GC business, full of shit in many cases. Heres a few tips

1. Don't believe anything they tell you.
2. NEVER NEVER pay upfront
3. ALWAYS get something in writing.

You may find that even in writing they will still deny saying it.

Good luck though

I do actually have something in writing (its in my favor) but when I try to contact them I get ignored, they keep saying they will call me back, but I am somewhat hazy.

I completely agree with all your comments, and it's annoying to have to be on the other end of the table.

What baffles me even more is that these people have homes, families and live in a community and they still have no embracement or shame to do as they said or promised, and in most cases they cost 'idiots' like me who don't know how to act, money and time. How can one perform good business practice when you have to deal with such people, it seems that these people are the bottleneck to my work.

Do I have to be meen, bastard-like to get somebody to honor his word?

Is there no other way, apart from shouting and acting like an ape?

Well i think I learned my lesson, if there is any more tips any GC business people can give me regarding business I would gradly appreciate it.

I once had two companies blame each other for the fault, as if they were school children and nobody really owning up to it. What would you do in such circumstances?

I tried being basterd-like, it works like a treat!! You have to be ruthless to be able to get something done, and persistent like a sore thumb.

Obviously you messed up with carpenters, plumbers, electricians, builders etc.
There is no way out with these people, the vast majority of them are uneducated, but... unfortunately they have too much work/are in demand.

Normal business, believe me is highly competitive and there is absolutely no way to survive if you are irresponsible.

The old trick of threatening you will not pay, or deduct a serious amount from your payment, always does miracles though..
