Can you back that statement up with some hard evidence? I travel to both parts of the island and see GC visitors to the north and TC visitors to the south being treated just fine.

Tim,

just because we live here in Cyprus, don't expect to know any better than these 2 about what goes on, on the ground. Zan lives in London for gods sake, probably in Hackney! Thats like living in Aglantzia.

I know. I once lived in Hackney myself.

You have my sympathy Tim . I lived there for ten years. :?

Don't tell me that you have made it to Palmers Green? That would just be too stereotypical.

Sorry, I am not that 'pretentious'.

After 'ackney, I lived in Sutton for ten years. Then moved on from there.

I think Palmers Green is characterless.

When we first moved to London we lived near Nags Head (I think that's Hackney :? ) in a tall, cold, old house and the contrast to our bungalow by the sea in Cyprus was such a culture shock. Yet it left an indelible impression of a black and white, atmospheric time that I can only recreate by watching Ealing Comedies ....

When the north commemorated their UDI's 25th anniversary, there were a number of media reports stating that a number Turkish Cypiot visitors to the RoCy were harrased and threatened by Greek Cypriot students. While the UDI anniversary may have been a major factor in these incidents, nontheless, Turkish Cypriots who visit the roCy have - on various media - state that they been made to feel unwelcome.

Let's put things into a bit of context here. Yes, there were some ugly scenes at the crossing points on the day you mention. However, the crossings have now been open for five and a half years, and there have now been a total of about 15 million crossings made by Turkish and Greek Cypriots. An official EU report last year made the following comment about the green line crossing points:

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/Lex ... 529:EN:NOT

"No major incidents were reported as regards the daily crossing of people at the check points."

In other words, the crossing points have been open for over 2,000 days, and in that time there have been ugly incidents on one day. This, overall, is hardly a bad record.

As to the comments made "on various media", you have to realise that certain people have ideological axes to grind and present a deliberately distorted picture. The evidence of my own eyes is that Turkish Cypriots who visit the south of the island are not made to feel unwelcome. Just this morning I was at Limassol zoo. I saw a party of about 12 Turkish Cypriots ranging from toddlers to elderly people - probably members of the same extended family - strolling around the zoo. They looked perfectly happy and relaxed, as though they were having a great family day out. Tourism is very important for Limassol, and it caters to visitors from many countries. Apart from anything else, it would not make sense in purely business terms for Limassol to make any visitors feel unwelcome. Other posters on this forum such as Kikapu have provided similar anecdotal evidence to show that Turkish Cypriots do not suffer bad treatment when they visit the south. If you prefer to ignore such evidence, and choose to believe the message promoted by "various media" that Turkish Cypriots have been made to feel unwelcome in the south, this is your choice.

Those who read my previous posts will know I spent 2 weeks in (if you're a Turkish Cypriot KKTC) (if you're a Greek Cypriot the illegally occupied area) in the past, if I had a stamp in my passport KKTC (which I do), and I attempted to travel to Greece or The Republic of Cyprus I would be arrested for illegally entering Cyprus but this is no longer the case, there is definately a softening of stance from BOTH sides of the divide.

It is a forgone conclusion that there will soon be a settlement to the Cyprus problem, Turkey is getting desperate to withdraw 30,000 troops from Cyprus (it's costing them a fortune that they can no longer afford) & Greece has a new and better relationship with Turkey, so they are also desperate to find a solution to the Cyprus problem....The biggest barrier is in peoples minds (just like when the Berlin wall came down) It's just a matter of time.

A genuine question....Often wondered....How does an army sitting in one barracks cost more than sitting in another?????? :?

A genuine answer to your genuine question zan, when I was on holiday in North Cyprus I saw many military vehicles from Turkey (with Turkish number plates) travelling to the barracks in North Cyprus, obviously they needed to cross by ferry from Turkey to Cyprus, this costs money & obviously costs fuel that they use whilst driving - the 30,000 Turkish troops based in Noth Cyprus need to be constantly supplied, this is very expensive for Turkey - don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed my holiday in North Cyprus & I love the Turkish Cypriots, they really are such friendly people, we are planning to return to the TRNC next year - but we also visited South Cyprus and we found the Greek Cypriots to be equally friendly and we plan to spend more time in the south next year.
As I said several times before, I don't take any sides in the Cyprus problem, I love Cyprus (all of Cyprus)...mark my words, very soon Cyprus will be re-united
