ban smoking

If people only smoke to look cool can they explain this. When explorers dicovered pygmies in darkest Africa many years ago they discovered them sitting round a fire smoking pipes and cigars made up from local foliage. I don,t remember if they mentioned that there were advertising hoardings dotted through the forest. You know the kind of thing. "Smoke Marlboro" look cool". The other thing about smoking is the health issue. I,m a line manager at work and it always strikes me strange that, by far, the worst sickness records in the company belong to the non smokers who will call off work at the drop of a hat, sometimes 3 and 4 times a year. They then have the audacity to criticise smokers and lecture them about their health and lifestyle. Hypocritical wimps!

I am not quite sure what your company is and how it worked but in my farthers company the opposite happened.

All the smokers always had a cough and there work seemed to be less. They seemed to be less fit, not to mension the number of coffee + cigarette breaks they demanded (more than the legal requirement). They always smelt of smoke, the worsed smells always use to appear when it rained and they were wet. It did not look good in-front of customers either.

On the record I would say that smokers had more days off, however their reasons always seemed to be a lot more serious than non-smokers. Non-smokers had the worse excuses for days off. Reason like "Its my grans birthday" or it's "my mates party" or "I just can't come in, I am going to my dads tonight".

The image of smoking and since changed from when explorers discovered pygmies in Africa, in England it is seen as a bad thing, however in Cyprus it is seen as cool.

Smoking was always cool when I was a kid. And I think now in the UK the only place where it is still considered cool is probably school. Apart from that in the UK a smoker is pretty much looked at like a tramp, or someone lying in their own piss. I don't think that way myself, but just go there and you will see what I mean. I don't think it has properly looked cool for an adult to smoke since like the 80's. I still believe in my leather jacket though...

What makes me laugh though is a completely drunk idiot or a hopeless junkie, or even a gambler who has destroyed their life, all used to be looked at as total losers when I was a kid. Nowadays the drunk idiot is just having a laugh and will be fine, the hoeless junkie needs our support, love, and aid, and the gambler is encouraged to gamble more. Hell when I was a kid even a credit card was seen as some evil thing. Not now. Even murderers, rapists, pedophiles, and drunk car drivers are being given support and help. If you are a smoker though then rot in hell. Cos you can stop at any time. Sheesh...

On the record I would say that smokers had more days off
I understand what you are saying, although in my experience it was the other way round. Our department had about 50% smokers at one point with 30 people in it. Another department (all women out of interest...) had about 20% smokers and about 10 people. We averaged about 2 days sickness a year. Overall they had about 5 times the sick days we had. With 3 times less people. Hmmm. Don't get me wrong though, sticking a ciggie in your mouth is worse for you, just pointing out my experience. Plus I have 3 great aunts all over 85 years old with Oxygen built into the walls of their houses who smoke a pack a day at least. I know, I don't understand it either...

Cheers

I smoke  and have done for years, my sister - who has never smoked in her life is the one who has asthma and bronchitis every year, not me. Its not fair I know!!! I agree with the ban on smoking to an extent, that is , its definitely not fair to pollute those around you, but I think that it should be choice whether to smoke or not in a pub or resteraunt and I feel sorry for those establishments that just dont have the wherewithall to provide the seperate place. In my home town (Southend on Sea) they already had "no smokers" areas - and these were always half empty, wheras the smokers areas were packed!!!

ban smoking

Postby Avanapa » Wed Oct 24, 2007 1:55 pm

Crivens, your right what you say regarding paedophiles, drunks, gamblers etc, Its the point I was making in my earlier post. People need to get their priorities right. Predictably, because of their success in introducing a smoking ban in Britain these small minded people have widened their net to go and sort out........ the FAT people. We are to have health warnings on foodstuff and the parents of fat children will possibly now be charged with child abuse.
No matter that we have cluster cancers in the vicinity of Chemopetro Plants all over the country. No matter that deisel fumes from cars are a known carcogenic yet diesel cars are now being promoted. No matter that our planet is dying because of pollution of the atmosphere. Lets go get the FAT people now. Simply because its easier to do that than face the real problems that exist. Its pathetic.

I'm not sure if true but someone told me that the tax collected here in the UK from tobacco industry is about 8billion pounds. If that is true then I agree that smoking should be banned so that the smokers do not have to pay these taxes on their own and non-smokers should share the burden. After all, they are the ones who are demanding the ban and should realise that you don't get nothing for nothing anywhere in this world.

Yesterday I went to my Clinic to keep an appointment. Outside the front door were 20 or so smokers obsrving the latest 'NO SMOKING' ban.

I could hardly see the door from the smoke exhaled by these sick individuals. By the time I went through the door I was coughing and spluttering having inhaled their exhaust fumes. I went to complain at the desk - as a separate - Smokers area' should have been provided. There was nobody to complain to. The smokers were all doctors, nurses and office staff and a few patients.

What an addiction! As bad as forum addiction

As far as I am aware, the no smoking ban is already a law, just not enforced. As an ex-smoker I can see the two sides of the argument, but believe me I prefer being a non smoker.
What gets me about Cyprus is the way smokers do not show or give any concern (talking mainly in restaurants now) about those people around them who may still be eating but still light up! Before you start, no, I never did this, I have good manners. Can they not wait 5 more minutes for goodness sakes.

Apparently, if someone was to complain to the owner/manager of the establishment (who by law have to display a 'no smoking' sign) about someone smoking in a no-smoking area and he does nothing about it, you can call the police. If they come the owner may be fined though I am not sure what happens to the smoker!!

If Cyprus wants to stay in the E.U. she will have to conform to these rules, which I might add are not just in Britain!! Why has everyone naturally assumed that all 'Ex Pats' are British anyway? I have no objection to smokers, I just do not want it blown in my face every time I go to the pub, restaurant or even the shops! Please!

And then you get in your car and join the rest of the drivers in a traffic jam inhaling the exhaust fumes....

I demand that the non-smoking ban should be extended to cars also, how dare they smoke while I have been banned.
