Ban Smoking?

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Smoking should be banned in public places. If it is a private place then the owner should decide if smoking is banned or not and he should put a clear label outside of his place to say if smoking is allowed there or not. This way people will decide where to go and where not to go.

smoking ban

Postby Avanapa » Mon Oct 22, 2007 1:49 pm

Exactly! the point you are making is that the the owner should decide if he wants to allow smoking and the people should then decide if they will go there What is happening however, is that the legal system is imposing laws in order to ensure that the choice is taken away. My point is however, that the authorities should be more concerned with issues that are truly a danger to society. Such as violence, drug and corruption

To Avanapa and Get Real!

Eimai Kybreos! = I am Cypriot

I am GC, both parents were born in Cyprus and in fact all four Grand Parents. Even my eight grate-grand parents (both mother and farther side) were born in Cyprus. To be exact they were all born in Kyrenia.

It's just I hate smoking, because my nose kind of closes and my throught hurts and starts to sting. Also if I go out and there are many smokers, I can be sure to wake up all ill and misplaced the next day, kinda sucks I know. Recently my teacher died from a smoking related illness, which does not help.

To be honest I should not really be complaining, it could be far worse, I could be a smoker. :-)

It will be banned in Cyprus whether you like it or not I'm afraid. Cyprus is generally where the UK was 10 years ago on most issues, so I would reckon it will be accepted sometime around 2017. ;)

As a Brit, I have to agree with Avanapa's comments. Cyprus may well be part of Europe now, but the charm of this island is the culture that has been built up over centuries, and us immigrants do not really have the right to complain about things we don't agree with. After all, we chose to come and live here! Most of the Brits moans about living in the UK now centre around the immigrant population, and yet I've always found the vast majority of Cypriot peole welcoming and friendly, not hostile as a lot of Brits are to outsiders where the UK's concerned.

That having been said, please please please people, put seatbelts round your children when they're in your car, and don't let them stand on the front or rear passenger seat, no matter how much they plead with you to allow it. One day, this really will save their life!

It's an entirely different situation though. The Ex-Pats that move to Cyprus choose to live here and spend their hard earned money/pensions here, thus boosting the Cyprus economy. The type of immigrants people moan about in the UK, move there to take advantage of the benefits system and contribute nothing.

I'm sure if the Cypriot government allowed foreigners to sponge off the state as the UK does, you would soon see a similar (in fact probably much worse) attitude to immigrants than currently in the UK.

I thought Cyprus didn't have benefit systems, especially for non-cypriots. I could be wrong obviously, but if not, then what do the other 99% do?

More interestingly, has anyone seen that IT crowd episode where the smoking rules get tighter? Funny as hell :) Where I used to work was getting like that when I left. No smoking room in a building with 500 people in it, so they were giving an allocated space to smoke outside. Then someone complained and said smoke got in her hair when she came back off lunch. Caused a hell of a fuss and smokers were asked to smoke in bushes away from the door. Nice. And then winter set in.

I also have a friend who went into hospital to give birth. She is a total chain smoker and had a couple of hours before things got going, and with the stress of everything she had to have a ciggie. Obviously they wouldn't let her smoke inside the hospital (not in years have they done that) but now with the new laws she couldn't smoke in the car park. Instead she had to go to the roundabout next to the hospital and stand by the side of the road (with her drip thingy apparently) with the other outcasts. Must have been like a zombie film or something...

Thats the main problem I have. Smokers are seen as scum who could give up any time. The amount of sympathy and help a drug or alcohol addict gets is amazing. And don't say druggies or alcoholics don't hurt other people. Smokers though can sod right off essentially. Unbelievable hypocracy in an "enlightened" society if you ask me.

Cheers

GR , Smoking is not only bad for your health it is also a dirty smelly habit that gets in your hair in your breath and unlike farting that is frowned upon , unfortunately the Cypriots still consider this disgusting habit as cool !!! As cool as my arse I would say !!
