Well over 50 per cent of the older people from my grandfather's village would mind of their offsrping married a Greek Cypriot from the nect village which is less than a kilometer away! And they still hold this "value" 33 years after losing the village in 1974! They still matchmake, trying to limit "outside" marriages. Are they racists against Greek Cypriots!!!!

What you linked us too is another one of those cockamamie posts about racism where the premise is false and the result is a report fit for papers like the Cyprus Mail and nothing else. The people questioned live in mixed blocks of flats, go to the same schools, participate fully in public life- labor unions etc, receive equal treatment by government departments etc. So where is the racism?

FC, I think you are confusing personal views with institutional reacism. There will always be personal preferences, like who you want for next door neighbors etc, with racism. nJudging from the posts here I have made my choices as to who I would want for a neighbor and the opposite. Is that racism?

If a person's race colours your judgement on a particular issue, then yes - that IS racism.

No, color and race do not come into it when choosing my next door neighbors (among the forum members like I said) . But discrimination it is none the less.

You asked above what is the problem with Pontians. Well there is no problem with them. They are Greeks who lived in the Black Sea area and most of them in Russia. Having lived under the communist regime they, like most others who lived under communism, have certain ways which might clash with Cypriot values and habits. They also speak a dialect based on ancient Greek, it is similar to Cypriot Greek but sufficiently different to make the speaker stand out.

It is interesting that Turks also have a certain attitude towards the (Turkish ) people of the Black Sea, the Lazo, who share many traits with Pontians.

Hands up those of you tired of seeing spiteful Jean Christou or Loucas Charalambous articles quoted from the Cyprus Mail! Image

GR

The Cyprus Mail syndrome is not unique to Cyprus. All over the world wherever there is a British expat community there is an equivalent newspaper. In Athens there is the Athens News, in southern France another one the name of which I do not recall right now.

The recipe is constant. Articles bashing the locals for rudeness, cruelty to animals, racism etc. There are the usual ads for Christmas Bazaars, Jimmy's Irish Pub etc. Do not take these papers too seriously. Their purpose is to act as Daily Mirros substitutes for expatriates.

It is inherent in all people to be wary of strangers . . . it is a natural survival mechanism. No one is immune from it . . . not even you.

However the civilising effect keeps it under control.

So no one race is more racist than another, only just how civilised individuals are, distinguishes them from this reflex . . . .

. . . which actually makes the title of your thread racist!

... say those that ethnically cleansed all Greek Cypriots, the great majority of Cypriots, from the part they illegally occupy so they could declare it as "Turkish".
