I know I have recommended this book before but this is how good it is...Anyone who reads and does not read this is missing something.

If any one wants to get into the head of a autistic type mind...If they have a relative or anyone they know that has an illness like that...then " The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night" will be invaluable to you. I have mentioned this book as well but I don't think that I gave an explanation of why it is so good. It is like one of those 3D pictures were you have to stare at it for a while before you get the effect...When you first see the picture in 3D everyone shouts "I'm in" and for a while you are in another world. This book had the same effect on me. You are in control and then you are not. Wonderful.

"Life of Pi" was mesmerising, Zan . . . I recommended too on the first page.

I did see that and you are absolutely right...Loved it, loved it, loved it...Mesmerising is a very good word for it.

Gosh, harmony!
Do books really have the power to bring people together?

I have the ability to switch off from one argument and discord and talk about another harmonious subject Phoenix. I don't hate for the sake of it.

A very healthy attitude and one which I share. :D

Zan, since you liked "Pi" . . . you may enjoy "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. It shares similarities in that it's the world seen through the eyes of a young boy and it drifts across cultures. It's obviously more political based in Afghanistan but again a very captivating story.

I will put it on my Christmas list.........Makes life much easier for my wife....

Why do you celebrate Christmas when you're not religious . . . or are you?

We celebrate the Winter Solstice on the 22nd December (usually) . . . to avoid hypocrisy! . . . and because it makes more sense to celebrate a natural phenomenon rather than a Human fantasy that divides people.

I don't celebrate any religious festivals. I just enjoy them. There is no need to be pedantic about not believing...I hate to be pigeon holed by the word atheist by the way...It just sounds like another religion.

Well gift-giving at Christmas usually suggests "celebrating" it as a religious festival.
I hate the label atheist too.
I follow anthropic principles which change to fit in with new developments and so do not pigeon-hole you.

I can make the gift giving say anything I want so it does not have to be about religion. The whole concept is a series of pagan celebrations put together into one day anyway.

I usually celebrate by watching "It's A Wonderful Life". It sort of gives me a warm glow that religion doesn't.

This has been a great interlude of idea exchanges . . . but I really want to scream and shout in the Cyprus Problem threads!

Thanks Mills and Bubbles for the extra suggestions.

Lena mou, not sure what you mean by any 'Greek books'? :? Do you mean by Greek authors or just English etc books that have been translated? If the latter, try reading 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop. It is a brilliant book and one I read in a matter of days. It does have 'Greek connections' inasmuch as the story is about the leper colony just off the island of - now this is the bit I forget - Crete or Corfu. It is a true and compelling story, I kid you not.

Louis de Bernierre's Birds Without Wings, one of the best written books I have read in years. It could have been 'located' in Cyprus. Sad but enthralling.

Sorry for the confusion Bubbles. I am reading books written by anybody .... if its a good book i don't care if it came from a Greek or English author or whatever....so doesn't have to be a Greek author. What I meant by Greek books...is written in Greek language. Only Joan suggested some of them. I wonder why the rest of the Greek speaking members did not suggest any book. I do read in both language but I would like to pass some of those books to my mom and aunt as well but they cannot read English.
