What is the best book you have read lately

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

I think Angels and Demons should have been made a film
I think they are making it.

Das Boot - the Germans were terrified too
Haven't read the book, but the film was amazing. Can't remember very well, but I though the Germans were the only ones in it really?

Oh, just finished "A Scanner Darkly". Not bad at all that one.

Cheers

Yes, only Germans in the book. Easy to fixate on a stereotype of Germans in the WWs, but the book is good at portraying a variety of different political views, degrees of cynicism, personalities, etc within the characters. Plus, the author is excellent at conveying fear and tension. Haven't seen the film or the the TV series, both of which are highly acclaimed, but having enjoyed the book so much I don't want to be disappointed as has happened with other films made from favourite books.

Examples: 'Papillon' by Henri Charriere - one of my favourite books from teenage years, read it many times, and couldn't believe how poor the film was, even through Dustin Hofmann was in it. Seemed like the budget for the film had gone, as the film ends about half way through the book if I remember correctly.

Also 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' by Louis de Bernieres. Thought this was a well told story with strong characters, film was dire (in my humble opinion!). Noticed others on this thread have enjoyed 'Birds without Wings' - also thought this was excellent. Not sure if a film is planned, but if so hope they do justice to the book this time.

Oh, just finished "A Scanner Darkly". Not bad at all that one.

Don't know this book - what's it about?

Another recent read that comes to mind is 'The Wasp Factory' by Iain Banks - disturbing but engrossing.

I know what you mean, but really the film is amazing. I think the TV series was just the film cut into a mini series format. It's really long.

Don't know this book - what's it about?
It is basically about drug addicts. It's set in the future, but that doesn't really effect things much. Main bloke is an undercover cop and is getting addicted to a drug that eventually leaves you like a vegetable. But the department he belongs to is so undercover that they don't even know who each other are. They wear scramble suits to meetings so no one can recognise them. Quite nice couple of twists near the end. Not brilliant, but not bad. The film stars Keanu Reeves and the whole thing is filmed with what looks like a cell shaded filter over everything so it looks partly like a cartoon.

Its called "Θεανώ: Η λύκαινα της Πόλης"!!! One of the best! If you can read Greek try this out.

One of the books that a friend told me lately that I should read is "Birds without wings"!

Any other suggestions?
What is your favorite book?

Hi Lena mou, my favourite book ever has to be ' The other side of Midnight' by Sydney Sheldon and the sequel 'Memories of Midnight'. Both brilliant. Also love anything written by Charles Dickens. :)
I am reading 'Angels and Demons' by Dan Brown at the mo but must confess that I am finding it hard going which is surprising as I enjoyed the first one, the infamous ' DaVinci Code!!

Bubbles x 8) 8) 8)

Bubble dont give up. it gets better. I found it more interesting than the davinci one. :)

Joan, just finished (said I was slow!!)'Angles and Demons' and you were right, :) it got better and the twists were great!! I recommend anyone to read it now. Brilliant!

SEEEEEE BUBBLES

I'm glad you did. I think Angels and Demons should have been made a film instead of the Da Vinci code even though i liked that one too. i think A & D had more things to "show" (history and tradition) which were very interesting and in a film it was going to be brilliant.

Go on Deniz we are interested to hear your comments on this book too. :D[/quote

Ela Deniz, have you read Angels and Demons yet :?: Did you enjoy it :?:

I have not yet re-started Angels and Demons . When I do, you will be the first to know  Dan Brown is usually good. You have to wait for a while
:(

In the meantime I am trying to sort out TC/GC relationships. Its tougher than I expected. I checked my Sigma Cat and antidotes for Snake venom, the prices are affordable but what genus I am dealing with, I know not.  Who can I ask?

Lucia Lucia - Andriana Trigiani

She writes about immigrant families (In her case Italian) growing up in another country, something I can definitely relate to.

Hi Bubbles, well I'm not an Italian immigrant but I am from a Greek Cypriot immigrant family and what she writes about is so familiar to me, as I said I can definitely relate..

This is the blurb of the book taken from the authors website..
