Das Boot - the Germans were terrified too
Haven't read the book, but the film was amazing. Can't remember very well, but I though the Germans were the only ones in it really?
Yes, only Germans in the book. Easy to fixate on a stereotype of Germans in the WWs, but the book is good at portraying a variety of different political views, degrees of cynicism, personalities, etc within the characters. Plus, the author is excellent at conveying fear and tension. Haven't seen the film or the the TV series, both of which are highly acclaimed, but having enjoyed the book so much I don't want to be disappointed as has happened with other films made from favourite books.
Examples: 'Papillon' by Henri Charriere - one of my favourite books from teenage years, read it many times, and couldn't believe how poor the film was, even through Dustin Hofmann was in it. Seemed like the budget for the film had gone, as the film ends about half way through the book if I remember correctly.
Also 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' by Louis de Bernieres. Thought this was a well told story with strong characters, film was dire (in my humble opinion!). Noticed others on this thread have enjoyed 'Birds without Wings' - also thought this was excellent. Not sure if a film is planned, but if so hope they do justice to the book this time.
Oh, just finished "A Scanner Darkly". Not bad at all that one.
Don't know this book - what's it about?
Another recent read that comes to mind is 'The Wasp Factory' by Iain Banks - disturbing but engrossing.
