Birds Without Wings by Louis de Bernieres

I defy anyone to read it without weeping!!! Its about the population exchange in Turkey at the end of the Ottoman Empire. Based in a mixed and happy village of Greek and Turkish people.

I tried explaining my tears to my wife. That was a useless exercise. She thought Turkish - all - sorts and Greek - all - sorts hate each other. They make up a lovely package. Like liquorice - all - sorts.

Its a really great book that doesn't take sides, it just follows the reactions of ordinary friends and neighbours caught up in extraordinary events. A truly great read. Sad that the "multi-cultural" societies of yesteryear were ripped apart by bloody politics!!!

Do you think the French Revolution had anything to do with all this?

Its called "Θεανώ: Η λύκαινα της Πόλης"!!! One of the best! If you can read Greek try this out.

One of the books that a friend told me lately that I should read is "Birds without wings"!

Any other suggestions?

Hi Lena mou, my favourite book ever has to be ' The other side of Midnight' by Sydney Sheldon and the sequel 'Memories of Midnight'. Both brilliant. Also love anything written by Charles Dickens. :)
I am reading 'Angels and Demons' by Dan Brown at the mo but must confess that I am finding it hard going which is surprising as I enjoyed the first one, the infamous ' DaVinci Code!!

Bubble dont give up. it gets better. I found it more interesting than the davinci one. :)

Joan, just finished (said I was slow!!)'Angles and Demons' and you were right, :) it got better and the twists were great!! I recommend anyone to read it now. Brilliant!

Likewise. My copy has been gathering dust since I put it on the bookshelf, after the first chapter.. I better continue reading it then.

SEEEEEE BUBBLES

I'm glad you did. I think Angels and Demons should have been made a film instead of the Da Vinci code even though i liked that one too. i think A & D had more things to "show" (history and tradition) which were very interesting and in a film it was going to be brilliant.

Go on Deniz we are interested to hear your comments on this book too. :D

It'll be a while as I have just began Patricia Cornwells new one, 'Book of the Dead'. I hope its an improvement on the last few. She seems to have lost her sparkle lately. Kathy Reich however is fast catching up with her though. Kathy has brought in a new angle to her thinking which excites me. I love pathology mixed with chemistry. I can easily adapt it to my teaching.

Hoever P. Cornwells work on the Whitechapel Murders was a masterpiece.

Recently read 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' by John Berendt. This one was a surprise, really enjoyed it. A lazy and relaxed feel to it, but the story is so well told you can't put it down.

Most thrilling war novel - Das Boot - the Germans were terrified too. It's a cracker!
