Well all those in red are popular pseudo self-help manuals churned out to satisfy neurotic introverts . . . so a word of how useful / interesting you found them might be productive. 8)

As for the others they are a stark contrast to the manuals. Have you read them all the way through or do you put them down and then go back to them years later? :?

 You read novels?

I can't wait to hear what others recommend . . .

Yeah, err... the hardback version of "Debbie does Dallas"? 8)

Whom are you questioning here, Lena or phoenix ? :?

I was talking to you doc...

Well when I can tear myself away from glazing over the Periodic Table memorising Atomic Weights . . . then I like to curl up with a cuddly tome :D

Is there any particular reason you recommend the hardback version as opposed to the paperback? 8)

Phoenix,

Talking of the periodic table, have you read Primo Levi's stories called 'The Periodic Table' ? Levi was a chemist and outstanding writer and poet, mainly drawing on his experience as a survivor of Auschwitz. Also see his 'If this is a man', 'If not now, when ?', 'The reprieve', 'The drowned and the saved' and 'The wrench'. To get a sense of the human condition -and to avoid the nonsense that is published in so-called 'self-help' books - there is nothing like Primo Levi.

Thanks for reminding me of Primo Levi Copperline . . . I've just retrieved it from the dusty bookshelf. I tried twice to read it and my bookmark is still left in the "Zinc" chapter. I don't know why I find him so hard going. His tone is just too "heavy-conversational" to engage me. I may give him another go tonight though!

Have you read anything by the psychologist Erich Fromm? In his "The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness" he analyses characters like Hitler, Himmler and Stalin. He really makes you look inside yourself and question how you can think more humanely.

Lena Hi

I really enjoyed and recomend " The life of Pi" - this book is a "everybody must read book"
"100 years of solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

For enjoyable reading i recomen Dan Browns books (Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, Digital Fortress, Deception Point) action and interesting novels. Try also greek books by Demoulidou Chrysa ( "To fili tou Drakou", "Antres efxaristo den tha paro" she is really good.

Enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!

Kil'n people
Hyperion omnibus
The Night's Dawn trilogy
One of us
The island (best last line of a book ever IMHO. Read the whole thing in a night. Great book). Oh, and this is nothing to do with that sci-fi film. Is an amazing horror book by Richard Laymon. Totally amazing writer.

Those are probably the best I remember from the last year. Read too much so probably forgot a few really good ones.

Cheers

Notice that most readers of novels are women? Ever wonder why?
