Cyprus on its own over Syria ferry dispute

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Is that $100 for a return trip, or each way?

Georgia demands that unless the Georgian flag is removed the ferry cannot travel.

GR, What has Georgia to do with this? I thought that these ferries would be Syrian Registry, and thus fly the Syrian Flag.

To the best of my knowledge there's only one ferry about to embark on this journey and it happens to be sailing under a Georgian flag.

Well, according to maritme law, any ship that does not fly - in international waters - a recognized ensign is going to be subject to seizure in certain ports. I suppose it wouldn't happen in the 'too-and-fro' ports of N. Cyrpus and Syria, but if anything happens and the ferry has to divert, the lack of an ensign is going to be a problem.

Playing the devil's advocate we can probably write up a book of what can go wrong but I think that more importantly the whole thing is unnecessary because it serves no purpose in the international arena other than cause ill feelings.

Is it ever possible to achieve independence (recognition) by violating international maritime law? I very much doubt it.

This will be third one.The Akgunler-1 ferry left the Gazimagusa Port this morning for the Syrian city of Latakiya with 40 passengers.

As from today, there will be two scheduled services per week from Gazimagusa and Latakia ports, with ferries leaving Gazimagusa every Thursday and Sunday for a day-long visit to Syria.

The ferry services between the two cities were to start yesterday but yesterday’s sailing was postponed because of bad weather conditions.
The Akgunler-1 ferry left the Gazimagusa Port this morning for a three-hour journey to Latakiya.

For adults prices are 100 USD
Students :75 USD

The ferry is 34m long 9.4 meters wide, 297(?) passengers travels at maximum speed 32 knots (59 km/hr) consumes average 900 litres fuel per hour.

I am very sorry but it doesn't even cover it's fuel expenses with only 40 passengers....

and when the unfortunate happens, and pray it doesn't, they will blame the RoC for putting them in a dingy

I say when, coz, some dickhead will sail in rough waters someday...you know the macho shit and all that...

I am with you NIkias...the 34m boat is far too small...Shit I wouldn't even cross the Tasman in this type of a boat...not that the governmant would ever allow such a service to take place...No insurance will ever take it on...

This tells me the authorities would rather risk human lives just to score points...

GET A BIGGER BOAT AND STOP PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK
