I'm moving back in january after being here for just over a year.

The main reason for going is money.Or lack of!

The little nest egg I brought over went very quickley.
I was looking for somewhere cheaper to live and we've applied to the tax people to be taxed here, which should be coming through anytime now.
I was prepared to struggle on for another year (12 months seems to be minimum ammount of time for rentals.) but I had a bit of a domestic crisis in UK at the weekend.
I'm needed back in the UK.

So I'm on my way home, but, I'l be back. Probably when my 12 year old goes off to uni.

No work for hubby after developer promised him employment(naive of us to believe him) so savings dissappeared alarmingly in order to live.Do not regret trying though but bitterly dissapointed. All our life's earnings still tied up in Cyprus in our property, reluctant to sell due to rip off developers charges to swap names on title deeds to new buyer and the chance that when the marina goes in(???????) we may even make a bit of profit.

I wish I could say I am surprised by what you wrote, but unfortunately you are by no means the first and will definitely not be the last to discover the not so nice side of Cyprus!
Unless you are retired and have a comfortable income, this is a very expensive country to live in and is getting rapidly more so.Jobs that pay well are few and far between with the good ones in the civil service and semi-government organisations obviously being only for Cypriots(understandably!) and even then only for those who have connnections etc etc!If you are self-employed and can find a niche where you don't have a lot of competition,it is still possible to make it,but there are so many ex-pats and other E.U. nationals here all trying to earn a living nowadays that it's becoming harder and harder!
As a foreigner, people don't get involved in the corruption and intrigue of Cypriot society and politics,or worry about the Cyprus question etc. so don't think things are a bed of roses for many of the local people here either because they are not!
I fully understand why so many people leave the U.K. all the time though but looking back on the nearly 30 years I have been here,if I was given another chance and given that there would not be a solution to the problem here so I could return to my wifes home in Famagusta, etc I would not have come here and probably gone to somewhere like New Zealand or Canada for a better life, especially as I had a chance to go to both of those countries in the mid 70's,but chose Cyprus, naively believing things here would be sorted out very soon etc!
I honestly wish you all the best of luck and hope you find somewhere better to live-I'm sure there are other options if you search around.
