European Identity in Cyprus

Here is some research carried out by Nikos Ilia (Department of Psychology, University of Surrey) to see how different ethnic identities might interact in the formation of national and European identity in Cyprus.

Attitudes between Greek Cypriots & Turkish Cypriots

Attitude..................National...........EU...........Trust.....Trust........Turkey's
...........................attachment....attachment...in EU....in UN........accession
..................................................................................................to EU

Greek Cypriots..........97%............32%...........54%.......25%..........16%
Turkish Cypriots........96%............50%...........51%.......50%...........86%
EU Average...............91%............63%............44%......52%...........31%

The greatest difference in attitudes is shown by Turkish Cypriots towards a possible Turkish accession to the EU. This might suggest a high degree of identification with Turkey.

 You're both confused . . . NOT Eurovision Song Contest, EU!

Can you not interpret data in a Table?

Look at the disparities between the TCs and GCs and rest of EU . . . NOW draw some conclusions . . .

I am sorry for the confusion...we are trying to unify the phone systems in the "RoC" and TRNC/KKTC and we keep getting a crossed line. Greece 12 points and the TRNC/KKTC 10 points.....

I did have a look at the figures but I couldn't extract anything interesting and to your observation that they suggest a "high degree of identification with Turkey" I say well duh!

I see we are dumbing down for now!

It was the psychologist that carried out the study who concluded that the TCs are identifying strongly with Turkey.

What I find interesting is that the TCs show more attachment to the EU. They also trust the UN more than the GCs do.

The GCs trust the EU more than they do the UN. I think this point is interesting and may show disillusionment with the UN but renewed hope for a solution from Europe.

Overall I would say the TCs are showing a desperate desire to belong to the EU either through Turkey's accession or perhaps through another source . . .

Well because a number of posts have been made denying that Turkey is interested in joining the EU.

And I do find it surprising that the TCs FEEL more attachment to the EU than do the GCs EVEN though it is the GCs that are REALLY in the EU and not the TCs who are still ruled by Turkey.
