Unlike the UK Cyprus can be very lax in gun control.
I brought my gun to Cyprus when I moved here in early June ~ the fuss and red tape at Heathrow was as I expected but I didn't expect the total lack of interest when I arrived in Cyprus.
Whilst waiting for my bags to arrive at Larnaca airports baggage reclaim I noticed an official looking guy standing next to the carousel ~ I asked him where I could go to pick up my gun ~ he pointed to the carousel ~ thinking he may have misunderstood me I repeated the question ~ he replied that " it will be with your suitcases " ~ and sure enough a few mins later it appeared going round the carousel with the rest of the bags.
Customs was just as bad ~ I went through the red channel so I could declare the gun but the customs guy wasn't interested ~ I had my EU licence with me and offered it to him ~ his comment was "is it your gun" ~ I replied yes ~ he then said "that's ok then" and disappeared.
I registered the gun at the local police station the next day and after paying my £30 went home with the licence .
Quite simple really compared to all the fuss made in the UK to renew a licence let alone try to apply for one.
One good thing came out of bringing my gun to Cyprus was that after checking in and leaving my gun with the Heathrow airport authorities I joined the long queue of lost and weary souls shuffling along waiting to get through the security scanners ~~ five mins after joining the queue I was pulled out and taken to an alternative scanner and was rushed through as the police wanted to check that the number on my gun corresponded with the details on my licence ~~ this was a real bonus as there was now plenty of time for looking around the duty free
shops.
Before anybody comments that I'm a blood thirsty hunter I will say that I only shoot clays and my gun is not suitable for hunting .
