Replacing Vista with XP/SP2 on a HP Laptop

Step1: Ensure that HP has a full set of XP drivers for your model including Audio, Video, Modem, Network, Wireless, and System by checking here… (In this case we are working on the HP 530 otherwise use the search window for your model)

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Te ... nvOID=1093

Step 2: Download each of these drivers and create your driver directory tree on a CD or USB stick.

Step 3: We need to create a floppy disk containing the “Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver” so that our SATA Hard Disk is recognized by Windows XP so insert a new floppy disk in your desktop’s floppy drive and download and run sp32478.exe from here…

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/gene ... R1002_USEN

This executable file will format and copy the right files for you to the floppy disk.

Step 4: You’ll need to connect an External USB Floppy Disk Drive to the laptop and insert the Windows XP CD in the CD-Rom drive before you turn on.

Step 5: When the Windows setup process begins press [F6] to specify “other SCSI controllers” etc and a note will be made by windows although it appears as if it’s ignoring you. A few minutes later it will prompt you to press [S] to supply a floppy disk followed by [ENTER] and once you’ve done that it’ll give you a list of drivers found on the floppy disk.
Choose "Intel (R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI controller (Mobile ICH7M)” and press [Enter].

Step 6: That’s it… proceed to delete and create the partitions accordingly and the rest of the setup process.

Good luck!

You would need to buy an External USB Floppy Disk Drive for around 20 pounds to do this. The process above is actually ONLY for brand new laptops having SATA hard disks... :)

I installed a SATA Drive on XP/SP2 and I didn't need any AHCI driver!

This is possible if the XP CD has had SATA support added to it.

Advanced Host Controller Interface

The standard interface for SATA controllers is Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI), which allows advanced features of SATA such as hot plug and Native Command Queuing. If AHCI is not enabled by the motherboard and chipset, SATA controllers typically operate in "IDE emulation" mode which does not allow features of devices to be accessed that are not supported by the ATA/IDE standard. Windows device drivers that are labeled as SATA are usually running in IDE emulation mode unless they explicitly state that they are AHCI. Windows XP does not officially support AHCI although some proprietary device drivers may allow it. Windows Vista and the current versions of Mac OS X and Linux [1] have native support for AHCI

Raymanuva & Sotos, unless you’ve recreated your XP CDs to include SATA support, chances are you don’t have SATA motherboards and your SATA hard disks are running in IDE emulation...

But unfortunately that's what all new computers come with these days so it's good to check if there's XP drivers for it before you buy.
