The majority of the guilty ones are keeping silent though. Look at my criteria Zan, you' ll spot most of them.

Damn my mouth has not yet tarred enough today. I 'll have another smoke

The only person that seems to have got it in the neck is iceman, which I thought was a bit unfair. No one bothered to reply to Miltiades' "Ode to Boozing" and his reference to civilisation being closely linked to the fellowship of the bottle.
The fermentation process was the wests way of providing a ready supply of a sterilised liquid other than the disease ridden water they had back then. The east achieved this by boiling the water and adding some sort of infusion to flavour it. The westerners developed an immunity to the alcohol content of their drinks and can now drinks vast amounts. Our liver and the primeval part of our brains that makes us gorge ourselves in times of plenty, have not kept up with the immune system. The excuses for the gluttony have far exceeded it though, to the point that one part of the brain can fool another.

Yes Zan , wine is the most civilized activity and the most pleasurable one too. Look what the Bishop said !!
Bishop of Seville
"I have enjoyed great health at a great age because everyday since I can remember I have consumed a bottle of wine except when I have not felt well. Then I have consumed two bottles."

I am interested to now what you think of the traditions that have evolved around the other option to wine which is Tea drinking. I don't think that that tea has been responsible for a lack of judgement in which one man takes out a dagger and sticks it into another.

Your analogy is totaly wrong Zan. Look at it this way. millions of people drive their cars , or other vehicles. Would you class all drivers as irresponsible because some drive recklessly , another example is Sex , most , if not all , enjoy this perfectly natural activity. Would you call someone who has sex every day as a sex maniac , or a pervert.
Wine is as old as man , it has therapeutic qualities and it is endorsed by the medical profession, are they endorsing excessive irresponsible drinking ? Of course not .Here is another example, food is also enjoyed by all humans , would you therefore call every one fat because they eat , the answer is the same as those who drink for the sheer pleasure of it, Of course they are not drunkards.
