Apparently the Arabs are grotty. My mum went a few years back....she said the place was incredible but the people unbelievably dirty. They couldmt eat anywhere but in the hotel. People serve food with black fingernails and considering that they wipe their bums with their hands, Im not suprised people are getting sick. :?
My mum said it was shocking but said shed definately go again. :)

My father worked with Arabs and said the same thing. We'll just have to be careful about where we go. I still want to experience it though!

(Thanks Zan but I'll still go to za - Nile I think!)

To put it kindly, standards of hygene are very low in Egypt, but I spent two weeks there with no problems. A week in the Hilton at Luxor, followed by a long drive to the (Russian built) Aswan Dam - memorable mostly for the 'comfort break'! We stopped at a wayside 'cafe'; the toilet defied description and we had an old gentleman armed with an ageing Lee Enfield rifle sitting outside 'guarding' us! (You will find armed 'Tourist Police and military escorts for Tourist coaches everywhere).

We then spent a week travelling back up the Nile to Luxor; I had no interest in Egyptology but some of the Tombs and Palaces are just amazing. i have travelled much of the world and I have never been to a country with more fascinating buildings/ruins, apart from the Palaces of India, perhaps.

Also did an Israel/Cairo trip; the Cairo Museum/Sphinx and Pyramids are a must visit - just avoid the camels, which are hateful things in any country.

Also be aware of 'Baksheesh': everyone expects to be tipped; have your photo taken by a policeman or camel herder and their hands will be out!

It is a very poor country and they do rely on tourism, which has been hard hit over the years by attacks on tourists by Fundementalists.

Thanks Lana

My mother was 'forced' on to a camel but asked to get off immediately. They wouldn't let her off unless she paid them and my father who had the money was half way to the pyramids. She was not happy!

What a shame it has such a bad reputation.

These comments really help - I'll stick just to the hotels and cruise I think.

Then it would just be a sanitized holiday and not an experience!

I guess but with kids you have to be careful.

I don't mean not see the key sites and experience the history - there would be no point going. However, I think I'll do this through an organised tour the first time. If it was just me and hubby I'd be happy just to go with the flow and put up with the bad points.

Just spent a fab 2 weeks in Egypt with no sign of any tummy trouble. Booked with South Sinai Travel, who have their own Nile cruiser, Mirage 1. The food, including salads was great & their guides were excellent. I'll definitely go again.

There are so many interesting places in the world . Arab nations , for me that is , are not. I would not eat at their restaurants if the food was provided free of charge on a gold plate ! Do I know something about Arabic eating and cooking habits ??? Maybe I do !!
Let me tell you I recently witnessed a new method , revolutionary I would say , of spraying olive oil on food being prepared !! But hey , what do I know , I'm only a catering equipment supplier !!!know what I mean !
