If I am biased as you claim then tell me where you disagree. Isn't it a fact that the Ottomans had divided people among the native Cypriots and their own Turkish settlers? Isn't it true that the conflict between the two sides starts from back then? Isn't it true that the TCs had sided with the British while the rest of Cypriots were fighting against them? Isn't it true that the constitution of 1960 was forced on us, and that in that constitution the British forced separation along ethnic lines in almost everything and gave you privileges on the expense of the rest of Cypriots?

And finally, isn't it true, that you do not accept one united democratic Cyprus where all Cypriots are equal without any racist discrimination?

Come on shahmaran, admit it. Your minority is promised gains on the loss of the other Cypriots, and this is why you cooperate with foreigners against Cyprus.

Yes, if by foreigners you mean PKK and EU, and by democracy you mean what we had during pre. 1974, and by nativity you mean prehistoric archaeological findings, since Greeks are the most ancient civilization on earth, then sure you are pretty "unbiased"

I mean god has placed you people on very strategical locations with his own hands anyways so whats more to argue right, sorry for the inconvenience caused due to the misunderstandings in the past, i will pack my shit today and move back to my "native lands"

Where did you get that from? The oldest traces of human life ever found are on the shores of Ethiopia. Notice how Ethiopians are a very UNIQUE breed of people having Caucasian features yet Africa tanned! Interestingly it is also the only predominantly Christian Orthodox country in Africa. Have a look at these Ethiopian girls...

I am English but my family come from scotland and Ireland, I don't go around calling my self Irish-scot or a gaelic/Celt, I am English.

So why are people disbanding their own cutlure and trying to name themselves as something they are not actually. I don't mean to cause offense but it isjust a reason to show why this island stands still, rather than moves forward.

Not insulting anyone, I do understand that people what to be determined for who they are but have you all forgotton the island that made you?

lots of love

Hello Beth,
I, and I believe most Greek Cypriots, identify ourselves as just Cypriots usually. The "Greek" part is just one of our attributes, and unfortunately those that made the constitution of our country and forced it on us have entered this ethnic discriminations right into our constitution.

So to answer your question:

For centuries there have been almost always two groups of people in Cyprus: The native Cypriot population (who were Greek) and the "higher class" of the people that the rulers of Cyprus had brought to our island.

The last 3 rulers of Cyprus were the Latins (Franks and Venetians), the Ottoman Turks and the British.

When the Turks invaded Cyprus and took it from the Venetians they killed 10s of thousands of Cypriots, and they almost totally exterminated the Latins. This is why today just 1% of Cypriots belong to the Latin minority. Then the Ottomans divided the people among their own Turkish settlers, and the native population. The native Cypriot population was forced to pay twice as much taxes, their testimony was not accepted in courts, and in general there was a clear distinction and discrimination between Christian Greek and Turkish Muslim in Cyprus. Cypriots tried to revolt many times, especially during the Greek war of independence when mainland Greece and many other islands got liberated from the Ottomans, but our attempts were unsuccessful. In general right from the beginning our relationship with the Turks has been a very bad one.

Then the British took over Cyprus. Unlike the previous rulers the British were not interested in bringing large number of British settlers in Cyprus. They wanted Cyprus mostly as a military base from where they could control the middle east. In the begging of the British rule, the British treated all Cypriots the same, and all Cypriots, regardless if they were Christian or Muslim, were getting along with each other.

Then after world war I and especially after world war II, Cypriots saw that all other territories were being decolonized, and they started to demand their rights. After so many rulers and oppression, the wanted to finally be allowed to determine the destiny of their own island.

However the British didn't want to allow Cyprus totally free since they still had many strategic interests on our island. So when Cypriots started to fight against the British for the liberation of their island as it happened with all other Greek island by then, the British turned the Turkish minority against Cypriots by promising to them a lot of gains on the expense of the rest of Cypriots who had rebelled against them. In fact it was the British who had first brought up discussions about partition, threatening Cypriots that if they do not accept their terms they would split Cyprus in 3 parts.

In the end Cypriots compromised and instead of a real liberation and full self determination for Cypriots, what we were forced to accept was some semi-independence, with foreign "guarantors", foreign troops, and 2 huge areas of Cyprus be given to the UK as sovereign(!!!!) bases.

What was even worst, those that made the constitution of Cyprus and forced it on us, made it in such a way that separation and conflict between GCs and TCs would be maintained. They separated GCs and TCs in almost everything, and they gave to the TC minority a lot of privileges on the expense of other Cypriots. This way they ensured that Cyprus would always be in conflict, and we would not be able to fight for our freedom and tell to their troops and bases to piss off our island.

After world war II and the rise (apparently just in theory) of decolonization, human rights and democracy, it was a good chance to leave the ruler/ruled division among Cypriots behind once and for all. Especially after Makarios proposed independence of Cyprus, that would be the ideal time to create a true independent state, with no foreign troops and bases, with democracy and no kind of discrimination and division among the Cypriot people. Unfortunately those that had the power decided otherwise, for their own interests.

You conveniently missed out the parts about the enosis dream, akritas, Bloody noel, 1963, the coup, the GC troops and lots more....why not tell us about those in your own words of course, try it with a hint of honesty.

Enosis was our right, which you violated. All we ever wanted was our rights as the great majority of this island who suffered under oppressive rulers for centuries. What we wanted was simply to be fully decolonized from our former rulers and finally rule our island in a democratic way without any foreigners imposing on us their own will with the help of your small minority.

Unfortunately for you being just equal Cypriots was never enough. You wanted to be the agents of the Turks and the British in Cyprus and have powers way beyond what proportionately belongs to you. You expected to have gains on our loss (and you still do) as your bosses had promised to you as a return to your valuable services in securing their interests on our island.
