International community showing frustrations with Tassos over Cyprus
The London Greek News
Former US ambassador to Turkey Morton Ambramowitz headlined "Cyprus Sabotage" has co-written an article in today’s Wall Street Journal which has underlined the Americans frustration over the perceived entrenched position of the Greeks in Cyprus.
Turkey has been placated from joining the EU by what Abramovitz describes "death die of thousand cuts at the hands of Greek Cypriots".
The article in the Wall Street Journals continues by saying,” with every passing year the impasse on the otherwise idyllic island solidifies. The lackluster attention paid by the EU and the U.S. the past few years has worsened matters".
The Greeks are also condemned for not agreeing the UN backed plan and advocating a solution based on "single state with a Turkish minority".
The impasse over access to Turkish seaports to Republic of Cyprus ships and the EU freezing membership talks with Turkey. If Turkey were to lift this ban an internal upheaval may result for Prime Minister Erdogan and may long term damage any chance of reaching a settlement.
"Sooner or later, however, the AKP reform process will hit the brick wall called Cyprus. In the face of Greek Cypriot intransigence and EU dithering, will the government let its ambitious agenda get bogged down by the military and its allies, who can use failure on Cyprus to force a domestic political showdown in Ankara and another with the EU? Turkey is on the cusp of an historic transformation. It has a majority party with an unprecedented mandate and a commitment to liberalize. If Ankara misses the boat now, it is not clear when it will get another chance"
In conclusion the article alludes to Turkey calling for a referendum in the occupied territories asking the settlers and illegal inhabitants if they want to have formal union with Turkey or seek international recognition. The solution according to the article is for the forthcoming election in the Republic of Cyprus to return anyone but incumbent Tassos Papadopoulos as President.
