The only time you would remove a helmet would be to maintain the airway as it might hinder access to clear the mouth and extend the neck, or perform a jaw thrust.
Airway is paramount and would take precedent over any suspected trauma, neck etc.

About the removing the helmet when a motorcyclist has crashed, I was given the advice not to remove it when I witnessed this actually happening over the telephone by emergency services but as he died anyway I wonder if I could have done more to help if it had been removed, I couldn't help him at all with the helmet on!
