A big "Well Done" to you if you bothered to organise getting the trash cleaned up...

Shame if all you did was photograph it . . :(

I agree, what a dumb site. Just picking on the negative rather than appreciate the many positives in Cyprus. Some poeple just have way too much time on their hands.

I disagree. Unless people are made aware of a "negative" aspect, nothing will ever improve. It's only a pity that the photos don't show those who do the dumping so that they could be named and shamed. In some parts of the USA, anyone caught littering is condemned to wearing a T-shirt for a couple of weeks, visibly showing, back and front, "I was caught dumping trash and this is my punishment" (they are given 3 such T-shirts and, if they are seen without them, it's straight to jail!)

Look at the first 6 photos here. The blue drum in the last 2 photos was potentially a dangerous pollutant. I obviously could not remove it myself a) because I have no licence to transport hazardous materials and b) even if I had, I had no means to safely dispose of it. Instead, I e-mailed the Ministry and informed them where it was. It was removed the following day. As for the car in the 4th photo, it remained there, by the side of a main road for several years. It was only my constant insistence that the mukhtar finally had it disposed of to a licensed car wrecker. If I hadn't yelled loudly, it would still be there.

I hope that exposing people to unpleasant photos will, in the long, improve the situation, even if those that dump rubbish like that obviously have nothing in their skulls to allow them to actually think what what they are doing.

The time and expense you have spent setting up the website you could've just submitted the photos with location details to the relevant authorities.

I wonder what's trashier... that on the floor or that in some peoples minds.

Devil,
Good that you did this. Very public spirited. I for one support your actions.

Unfortunately throwing rubbish in Cyprus is a national activity that equals that of cooking souvla. If you take walk along the Limasol molos you will come across so much rubbish discarded by thoughtless individuals , it is an eye sore just as much as the stainless steel sinks that have recently been installed on this very picturesque part of Limassol. It seems to me that the Cypriots "enjoy " seeing empty bottles of beer , cigarette packets and other rubbish scattered around this part of Limassol.
I nominate the most unsightly place in the whole of Limassol the rocky part of the Molos where irresponsible people leave their rubbish behind , once they sat and enjoyed the views not caring if others also want to enjoy this part without seeing their rubbish.

Go on GR, blackmail and threaten him and his family for trying to help clean up your country. Go to his site, nick his details and post it in every forum, that'll teach him to try and clean up your country.

How dare he!

Yes, all the proper authorities have been notified ( SBA, MOD of UK, MOA, MOI,Commissioner for the Environment-Cyprus,Commissioner for the Environment-EU,Mayor of Limassol,District Officer of Limassol,Political Parties, politicians, enviromental agencies and newspapers etc).
I had also a long talk on the phone with the Commissioner for the Environment-Cyprus and a short automated reply from the UK MOD.
The first official reaction as far as the trash on the Lady's Mile area is concerned was that every department of the government is trying to pass the ball to the next guy !! Yet !!

I will not comment, yet , on the negative reactions that some people expressed in this forum, although i admit that i had some reservations myself for the same reasons as well. I have discussed this project , before i begin ,with a couple of officials ( of various levels of authority) in their private capacity and their opinion ranged from slightly negative to slightly positive.
I will continue and actually i might try to organize a private clean-up.
I also have to inform you that a lot of governmental (and EU )funds are appropriated each year for such purposes and no governmental excuse of not using them is valid.
A.
