If the one plus in Ottoman occupation was the saving of the church, then I for one would have opted for turning catholic rather than going through the three centuries of Ottoman rule. Not because it was Ottoman, but becaue while it was there the rest of Europe, that is the Catholic world, was in full blown Renaissance and we in Cyprus were in the dark ages. As a non religious person maybe I am not aware of the benefits of having one kind of priest over another. Corfu and the other Ionian islands were under Catholic control during the Ottoman times and they do not seem to have suffered loss of faith etc. Alas there were no choices back then!
Well. Corfu and the Ionian Better than no choice, but you can not please everybody all of the time.
