Why wont the Turkish Cypriots give back Varosha

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby GeorgeV97qaue » Mon Oct 01, 2007 3:58 pm

It's funny how we've only had one TC reply to my post. I really interested in what their take is. It could be that they are too embarrased to answer my question because they dont have a valid reason for keeping the GC's out of Varosha.

Nikitas,
Separate from the political question of opening Varosha, do you think that a rejuvenation of Varosha (principally as a tourist economy) can be supported by the international tourist market in the medium and long term ? In other words, what is it that Varosha could offer that existing tourist destinations don't already offer ? I ask this because, in general, I'm very sceptical of the fickle and unreliable nature of the tourist economy wherever it may be to sustain an economy and to sustain it sustainably.

Varosi was always a tourist destination, internal tourism back in the 50s and then it just took off as an international destination in the 60s. The beach is a major asset, but to back it up there is a real city, with real people and not some them park purpose built backdrop.

As a native son I want to agree with DT and say it is the best beach in the Med. It is not. There are longer beaches in western Greece, in Kyllini for instance, and more picturesque harbors in the Greek islands and more sophisticated spots like Monte Carlo. But Varosi is definitely the best spot on the eastern Med and near enough by air and cruise ship from all the other spots in the area- Israel, Syria, Egypt, Turkey and even further afield.

Assuming that town planning errors of the past can be corrected (hotel too big too close to the water), and modern tourist trends (activity tourism) can be incorporated in the mix, then definitely it has a future without resorting to "development" of virgin areas. In some ways the revival might relieve the pressure from other areas of the island and perhaps lead to the return of some areas to their former natural state.

Varoshas beautiful but Karpaz' beaches are just... Image

Saying that the beaches there are isolated and should remain that way! They should be protected from the evil tourists that abuse everything everywhere they go!

correction..with a city infrastructure behind the beach.

I heard about the Karpasi beaches. My dad comes from a village there and he's described how there wouldn't be anyone else for miles on the beach.

Surely a thriving Varosha is good for the entire Island. This would benefit the TC's who live in the North part of the town with the extra trade it will bring.

The TC should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this once beautiful town to rot away. It's obvious to me that the TC's just don't care about their country. All you are interested in is holding the entire Island as hostage until you get what you want.

If the TC's did give Varosha back this would show good faith and maybe just maybe this might just trigger the solution we all desperately want.

You said it, it is a hostage. I would rether they give it back, but as you said, a hostage is a hostage. It is unfortunately a bargaining tool. If the goverment really wanted it back they would have reciprocated with a concession of sorts. If the TCs gave it back willy nilly, then the GC gov would be asking for the shirts of the TCs back nest. I'd say they should give it back now or cntrol it jointly with the port under the EU admin and hope for the best.

It was beautiful, but I did hate the mini sky scrapers (personally)

You are right DT, the beaches near my father's house at Trigazi were completly deserted, no tacky kiosks or umbrellas just miles of deserted golden sand. I expect a lot of them are military zones now.
