The long history of ethnic cleansing

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I've been berated by some posters as if by mentioning other cases of what has come to be labelled 'ethnic cleansing' the tragedy of Cyprus is somehow belittled. This is a nonsense of a conclusion to reach of course. Also there are other examples than Cyprus where population expulsion has been used quite deliberately - and accepted in international law - in state formation. In my view it is a tragedy and worthy of outrage and condemnation, but in the end that is the history that we inherit though we may loathe it.

Looks like a feeble attempt to sanitize the GC ethnic cleansing carried out by Turkey in July 1974.

For your info I've been asked by three people so far in private what I think of you and my answer remains the same... not much!

GR
I'm bewildered as to how you reach such a conclusion based on a post which effectively lists a large number of examples of ethnic cleansing and makes no comment either way about GCs or TCs ! I did say that these examples are a
"tragedy and worthy of outrage and condemnation"
, but somehow you manage to twist that to interpret it as "a feeble attempt to sanitize the GC ethnic cleansing"

"For your info I've been asked by three people so far in private what I think of you and my answer remains the same... not much!" Staggeringly uninteresting and inconsequential

That’s the very problem here; you are attempting to bury the Cyprus tragedy in a long list of other and not necessarily relevant tragedies from around the world.

We Cypriots refuse to become forgotten statistics in a list and do NOT accept the current situation regardless of the military strength of our enemy. We will not rest until the rightful government of Cyprus extends its authority to all four corners of the island and there are not enough CoperLines on this planet that can ever sanitize our minds from the events of July 1974.

Get Real, you see this issue as simple black and white. The trouble is however is that issue is more like infinite shades of grey.

Unless you elaborate on these shades of grey nobody can possibly respond to your post Blackey...

The meaning of the above would be: if you're not for my viewpoint whoe-heartedly, you're against me?

Black and White means good vs evil. Since extremists on both sides did do some pretty nasty things to one another, that 'grey-shades' the issue. Like it or not, GR, no one side is 'lily-white'...

The RoC is the ONLY recognized representative of the whole island of Cyprus so extremist’s actions from the past are irrelevant to my initial post which you responded to.

PS: I'm referring to "Blackey" your alias on ATCA...

GR,
you are attempting to bury the Cyprus tragedy in a long list of other and not necessarily relevant tragedies from around the world.

This is palpable nonsense. How do you know what my intentions are ? Surely if I wanted to bury the Cyprus tragedy I simply wouldn't mention it, or maybe I'd deny it, neither of which I have done. When people suggest that Cyprus is exceptional I've simply responded by suggesting that it isn't. When people say that Cyprus problem can't be solved, I'm suggesting that we look at other examples. When others have deeper catastrophes I'm suggesting that we should beware and learn lessons.

The notion that I'm trying to bury the Cyprus tragedy is absurd. The notion that the Cyprus problem is reduced to a 'statistic' simply because one lists number of those expelled in other countries is an equally stupid accusation.
'... there are not enough Coperlines on this planet ...blah blah blah..' Just plain silly.

Get Real, Believe it or not, I'm not Blackey. I had thought that your reference was in retaliation to my black and white phrase, and that you had put me in the 'black' side. In regards to what I have been saying about 'shades of grey', I've been reading up on the Cyprus problem through http://www.cyprus-conflict.net/. It makes for interesting reading as to what both sides did to each other.

GR, I think I've found where expatkiwi got his land figure. This is taken from http://www.cyprus-conflict.net/makarios-denktash%20talks,%2077.htm : Denktash pressed by Makarios, replied. "Since you insist I mention a percentage, I say 32.8% which corresponds to Turkish Cypriot ownership of land."
