Water Supply in Cyprus

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Postby oranos64 » Tue Oct 02, 2007 11:34 am

I find all of these comments worrying ...it seems that one of the most essential elements needed to sustain life is being both wasted and the governement here in cyprus ,unable to put togeather any plans to tackle these issues.

I quoted worry figures on the forum ...an expanding popultation and inadequate solutions to the water issues .

i really feel its time the government departments actaully prove their abilities to cope with such issues ...no plans seem to exist .

to the globetrotter ...please contact your respect EURO MPS ...Your U.K euro mps can voice your concerns ... highlighting the issue to the media too (election time is coming up soon )

devil ...you have a lot of knowledge in these matters ...would you and globe consider joining me in developing and creating a pressure group to tackle these matters ... i am already putting togeather a environmental pressure group in my area of arathipou/larnaca ?

Oranos

It would not be right for me as an alien and a guest to participate in anything political. Even as an EU citizen, I have never voted in local elections because of this sentiment. Imagine if I came into your house and started saying you are cooking your ttavas wrong; would you be pleased? I enjoy very good relations with both the mukhtar and his opponent at the last elections and I prefer to keep it that way by being apolitical, especially as my Greek isn't brilliant.

That having been said, while remaining resolutely outside your group, I would be willing to consider helping you on purely technical matters on environmentally-related issues. You can get some idea of my views at this page or my views on the Cyprus situation here.

In case you are not aware of it, I also run a Cyprus environmental forum. This is apolitical but you may wish to join in the debates there.

Thank you Oranos, but I am not even British! And as I now live here, I think it is a local issue and am considering getting the "Non Cypriot" residents together to do something about this issue. I have already voiced my concerns with various local authorities, so far I have not heard anything. It sadly seems to be the old mentality - stick your head in the sand and the problem will go away

Today is the 4th day that our water supply as been cut - and I am certain the little old ladies in the village square were still washing down their footpaths in the morning.

Neither. It is an Arabic word (NOT Turkish, although it is used in Turkish) and designates a village headman. In reality, it applies to the chairman of the village council. In Arabic, it means "he who is elected". It is used to denote the mayor pretty well throughout N. Africa and the Middle East. It is not a Cypriot word. It was used in Cyprus before the Ottomans arrived in the 1570s so may have been imported by Arabic traders or it may go back to the Phoenicians.

There was an Islamic revolutionary, called al-Mukhtar, just 63 years after Mohamed's flight from Mecca to Medina (the starting point of the Hirjah calendar), so we know that the word was used in early Muslim times and probably predates Jesus Christ.

In Bahasa Malaya (the Malaysian language) there is a word 'mukim' and is derived from mukhtar meaning the area that is governed by him, although I don't think that 'mukhtar' is now used, even though mukim still exists in Brunei and a few places in Malaysia, meaning a small subdivision.
