The National Guard is not a RoC constitutional army! It is a side-constitutional army! It is not an all Cypriot state army, but a Greek Cypriot one; that is why Armenians, Maronites and Turkish Cypriots are not compulsory recruited into! As we know, the 1960 constitution provides for an all Cypriot mixed army, composed by all communities in a ratio of 60:40, between GCs and TCs!
However, due to the fact that Turkey was plotting and threatening to invade, and because the shadow TC leadership under Denktash and the TMT, did not want the establishment of such a Cypriot army, and because such an all Cypriot army would have to eventually be called upon to fight the Turkish invading forces, and because the TC leadership wanted to act as a facilitator to the invasion and occupation of Cyprus by Turkey; the sabotaged the establishment of such a Cypriot army so that Cyprus would remain defenseless and in the mercy of Turkey! The basis on which they sabotaged the establishment of a Cypriot army after 1960, was due to their claim that such an army should not be mixed but separated! They claimed that there should be separate all TC units, and separate all GC units, under separate commands.
Presumably the reason they wanted this arrangement was so that when Turkey would have been invading, they would have been in the position to turn their guns not against the foreign invader but against the rest of the Cypriot army units that would have been composed by GC soldiers! The GC leadership naturally did not accept such a “deal,” however it couldn’t have left Cyprus defenseless on the other hand! The result was that in 1964, after the TCs withdrew from the RoC, to enact a side-constitutional law based on the doctrine of necessarily, which provided for an all GC army to defend Cyprus and the GC community from the constant Turkish invasion threats and the mutiny of the TC leadership!
Due to the fact that the National Guard is a Greek Cypriot (community) army, and because under the 1960 constitution, each community has the right to use Greek national symbols in its private activities (churches, Greek schools, etc,) the GC National Guard also adopted Greek Symbols!
I personally disagree with this policy! I believe it is about time we reform the NG into an all Cypriot army, use exclusively Cypriot symbols and flags, as well as adopt a Cypriot anthem! After all, it is the north of Cyprus that is under illegal Turkish occupation –hence the use of the Turkish flag, and not the south under any sort of Greek occupation! However, because of the existence and reactions of DYSI -a strong rightwing nationalist party in Cyprus; i.e. the party with which EDY (Bananiot’s) party collaborated in order to abolish the RoC and sell half of Cyprus to Turkey via the Annan plan, so that they can institutionally attain and live into a purely Greekified “half of Cyprus component state;” it has so far become very difficult to proceed in taking the above measures towards making a proper Cypriot army!
I hope that within the framework of a proper solution of the Cyprus issue, and the subsequent ending of the illegal Turkish occupation, we will also establish a Cypriot anthem and a combined all Cypriot army!
