Surveillance in Cyprus

Postby EasyE » Sat Sep 29, 2007 5:37 pm

Hello

We have just purchased property in Paphos and are concerned about crime in the area. I know several people who have been burgaled and I even know someone who has had his property burnt out.

Is security a big issue over in Cyprus now?

We will only be popping over for the odd week here and there and don't intend on renting it out. I have also heard some nightmate stories about property maitenance companies and alarm systems are a complete waste of time.

Does anyone know any good security companies? I would love to be able to view my property over the internet and have seen a company that looks very interesting. But does anybody know anyone before I sign up with these guys? The company I have spotted allow me to view our home over the internet and they offer to send SMS text alerts and speech alerts should anything happen over there.

Thanks for reading this message

Though you can view over the internet, whats to stop me pulling out the jumper cables in the telephone DP (distribution point)? Without wishing to alarm you (excuse the pun), just by pulling out these wires will break the link you have to view your home.

I'm also assuming that you will need a broadband connection in Paphos for this to be able to stream to you? what happens if there is a problem with the ISP that you are using? who will be there to report the fault and let the engineer in to run his tests?

Don't wish to scare you, but its just a couple of points to think about. I'm not a security specialist, so I don't know if there is a work around for this. Its something that you WILL need to find out though.

Course there is broadband on Pafos. I'm talking about things to think about with the security option they are considering.

Good points though Hazza.

It would be highly unlikely of being broken into and the ISP falling at the same time, it would be very unlucky on our part!!!

I suppose the internet can fail, but it can fail in every country. To have something like this installed is better than having nothing at all.

The bit about unplugging the phone cable out. I suppose I wouldnt be able to view my property but I think they said that the images are stored on a central server so i would still be able to see your ugly mutt! :)

How will this company have everything on their central computer? how is it fed there? will it be through internet or satelite links? If its internet, then the same principle of pulling out the phone cables. If its satellite, then don't know.

With that, I don't actually mean you tell us here, its just something to think about :) Whatever system you get, if it involves the phone, make sure its VoIP compatibe so that you are safe in the future should you ever change phone provider.

Hazza the Jumpers would be in the PCCP (primary cross connection point/cabinet or sccp/pillar) and not the DP which is usualy a pole and would require climbing to do this, most alarms that go through to a control room are also set to report if the cables are cut/disconnected, some to the police and some to the alarm company.

Correct, and if the camera detects failure and fails to connect to the server I am sent an alert. If this happens I would either contact my property maintenace team, a friend or even the police.

Yes, Hazza. The footage is fed back to server I beleive. Don't ask me how as im not that technical!

Sorry to bud in like this, I think, at 4am in the morrning it will take 2 people 20 minutes to clean your house in which time you have no chance to do anything. Just don't keep valuable stuff inside. Your neighbours are the best security.
