I've no grudge with you or your trousers Denis. I don't really believe in ghosts but I've spoken to people who say they have experience of them.

We seem to keep regressing to dressing up as priests and nuns again!

...and eliko is talking of the National Guard, I presume

It sound like a lovely venture, Phoenix. With your camera and note book at the ready, I will be the first to buy your book. (you will write about the trip for sure) Good luck.

Deniz . . . I will dedicate it to you! :D

However you may wish to check the details first before accepting this dubious honour . . .

So far it's a series of obstacles and land mines to combat before I can do something as simple as cycle around my island. . .

I NEVER had this trouble when I cycled the coastline of the Isle of Wight!

I suggested in a different thread having peace parks as part of demilitarisation. How about cross island cycle routes as the first step (pedal) in the rights direction for all. The coastal route one which Phoenix has enquired about is made difficult, if not impossible, by precisely those military installations and restrictions that impedes even the most innocent and enjoyable of activity.

'Le Tour de Cypre' could have its humble beginnings in a coastal route we could call the 'One Coast Cyprus Circuit', 1C3 for short.

Start Kato Pyrgos, around Akamas and all the way to Larnaca, cross at Pyla and to Famagusta and all the north coast to Kato Pyrgos Border. I don't know how you will get back though.

Kafenes . . you are being really helpful, thank you. :D

So if we went South from Akamas then East aiming for Famagusta via Cape Gkreko then back round to Pyla . . . I take it there is a "border" crossing there then?
OK then round the Northern coastline and down to Kato Pyrgos . . where as you say we may have to head inland to Nicosia to cross back.

Surely there must be a border crossing at both extremes of the island?

Anyway that's really helpful so far Kafenes . . and hopefully somebody else can come up with some more links and directions.

I sincerely hope that by the time you undertake this not so easy task (hills and valleys) there will be no checkpoints, no military areas and most certainly, no minefields left on the island.
Also I am sure you will find 'very well behaved' TCs to accompany you all the way. Good luck Michael Palin can eat his heart out! :lol

As far as I am aware you can't cross in either direction at Kato Pyrgos. You won't have to go all the way to Nicosia before heading back north to pick up the trail (though I think you'd still have to head south and then east through the Troodos), because there is a vehicle crossing at Astromeritis/Bostanci just south of Morfou/Guzelyurt. By my estimate, that means losing about 25-30km of coast road and having to detour on mountain roads some 60-70 km.

Copperline thank you for your input. The crossing at Astromeritis sounds ideal.
Between yourself and Kafenes I have a better picture of the potential "border" crossings.
The rest I envisage will be seeking permits etc from the right sources . .

Between your previous comment on highlighting the need for landmine clearance, Eliko's sponsorship idea and Kafenes' border crossing problems, I've had my eyes opened to the possibility of establishing permanent cycle paths through Cyprus . . this has great potential for specialist tourism (eco-friendly) etc.

Lots of food for thought . . .
